"Unified Mail" sounds great, but what's Das Deutsch Übersetzung for that?
Dear Paris Geek,
"comon mail box" = "gemeinsame Mailbox" (Actually Mailbox is "Briefkasten", but the anglicism is more common in the "E-world".)
"common place" = "gemeinsamer Ort"
"unified mail" = "vereinte Mail"
But all terms do not really fit for smart inbox.
Fokusbox is inventive, corresponds to the function and sounds well.
Ok, and what is the meaning of Fokusbox outside of AquaMail?
Sorry, but I think nobody can imagine what should it describes.
This Term doesn't corresponding in the same way like e.g. "Smart Mailbox".
Furthermore it isn't a "German translation".
At the moment i can't make a better suggestion.
In German, «Smart Folder» has been translated to «Smart Inbox». Since sent messages can also be shown in Smart Folder, I suggest that translation to German be updated. Someone may help ?
Try (in German):
Unified box
Composed box
Smart box
Smart folder
Unified folder
Intelligent place
In French, it's «Boite unifiée» - very good choice
Is is so hard to say in German "Unified Folder", "Combined Folder", or "Intelligent Box"?
Kind regards from Paris.

Mattik, I fully agree with your opinion.
What are your thoughts about

"Kombinierter Ordner" (combined folder) or - my favorit -

Accordingly, we are in a time warp and going back to February 26th, 2014:( I did not actually add "Ja, ja!" would this be a good idea? )
Definetely no. ;)
May I revive the discussion about "Smart Folder"? "Smart" is a term, which is a commonly used in german language, but "folder" is not.
Usually this term is translated to "Intelligenter Ordner". Compare to other software by Apple, Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Firefox (> Smart Bookmark Folder).
So we would have an appropriate expression, additionally it makes clear, that it's not a static folder.
Another suggestion:Actually, it is imperative 2nd person which is consistently preferred in AquaMail's strings (English, German,... and other languages)
New string:
<string name="prefs_ui_webview_html_wrap_summary">Es wird versucht, formatierten (HTML-)Text zu umbrechen</string>
(Reason for this suggestion:
Avoiding 1st person in german strings)
Actually, it is imperative 2nd person which is consistently preferred in AquaMail's strings (English, German,... and other languages)
Yes. That's why I asked for "revive"... ;)@nica:
In my opinion there is no need to translate every single word, especially for technical terms. In general, I agree with you.
Login, Server , Port , WiFi, Mailserver, IMAP Push, Expunge(*), Message ID, Auto-sync, Navigation Drawer(*), Floating context bar(*), App, Spam, Icon, Button, Inbox, Account, ... and lastly 'Smart Folder'.
Especially in the German translation, since for Germans a Smartphone is just a Smartphone... not a "Intelligentes Telefon".
In summary:Ok, no problem for me. Now I will end up the discussion.
In my (personal) opinion 'Smart Folder' is a technical term which renames a unique feature of AquaMail and therefore requires not necessarily a translation.
See these 6 items in screenshot:Hi Nica ,
- Each of them show "neutral" way in header
In summaries:
- item no. 4 and 5 is written in "neutral" description with action verb at the end. (This is as it should be from my opinion)
- item no 2, 3 and 6 shows "1st person"-description
- item no 1 - hey ;) - You see another new way to go: "3rd person" description.
Um, actually maybe Smart Folder should be translated. Here are some more examples of other translations:
The examples above (Outlook, OS X) are telling, and then Smart Folder is not really on par with such established terms as WiFi, IMAP, etc.
( it would be silly to translate IMAP, or WiFi... maybe Push should be translated though, I'm not sure, it's not in Russian where it's almost a "borrowed word, used literally" )
FWIW, in the French translation, it's "boite unifiée", "unified folder" and I like how it's easier for the user to understand.
...Nica:
http://www.aqua-mail.com/forum/index.php?topic=2214.msg23106#msg23106
@mikeone:@nica
"Smart Folder" is generally very inaccurate term. I showed what others are doing with translation.
Following your thoughts we will have to replace the english (!) term "Smart Folder". Ok. :)
I am fine with english "Global Folder" instead and in german "Globaler Ordner".
Smart and not Global because one can individually select folders to be part or not of Smart folder.Hi Paris Geek,
In Roman languages (e.g. French) "smart" is not applicable, it means nothing here. Instead, "Unified box" is used. In Arabic, it's "Unifying folder" or "Unified folder" (same spelling, different pronunciation).
"Unified" / "Unifiée", in german ("vereinheitlicht") is not a common term for mail folders. Maybe we end up with "Gemeinsamer Ordner" which was already suggested in this thread.Hi nica,
The Smart Folder in AquaMail implemented by Kostya is a unique feature which is indeed not comparable with other email clients.I think it's comparable. It is a special kind of "Smart Folders", which others call "Smart Folder" and provide as virtual folder for "saved searches" - see above. But in AquaMail there are less features for it. You can not use search terms (like in other clients), but you can select locations (=folders).
(e.g. a folder is not a box)
I agree with StR.(e.g. a folder is not a box)
Computer terms do evolve.
Before the intervention of Windows, "directory" was the common term for the entity containing folders on a storage device. With Windows, that term got replaced by "folders" (except maybe for some technical people, - sysadmins and (at least some) software developers).
"Folders" is widely used for the "collections" of files and "collections" of mail.
(E.g. check it is very common to hear: "You should check your Spam-folder...")
"Mailbox" term is old and comes from the "snail" mail. With that comes some variations (mbox, box, ..) That terminology is very common, and it is present in the e-mail-releated programs, apps, and services (e.g. pobox.com)
Interestingly enough, several large online storage services also use "box" for "storage":
dropbox, box.com, ...
So, at least in English, there is a large overlap between "folder" and "box" in how they are used in the "digital world", while in the "analog" world they are very different.
:)
Hello, I was surprised to see that there was a decision for "SmartBox".@nica:
From my point of view this was not the best choice ;). I showed some friends the UI of AquaMail with SmartBox at the top. They thought of similar things like "Fritz!Box" (router model) and mailbox, which is associated in german language with a voice mail system. But one of them supposed, that there could be some magic, which is done by the SmartBox. ;)
Now I see this result:
I restarted a discussion about translation of Smart Folder, and there was a discussion again about it, thank you - though it would have been better, if some more users were involved.
The new term is not the one I would see as the best one, (e.g. a folder is not a box). But at least we get rid of the english term "folder". So bottom line it's a step forward.

<string name="prefs_ui_main_read_archive">Markiere als gelesen beim Archivieren</string>
<string name="prefs_ui_main_read_archive_summary">Markiere Nachrichten als gelesen, wenn sie in den Ordner \"Archiv\" verschoben werden</string>
The German translations thus correspond to the English original text: (..)Translating word by word ist not what "correspond" of a translation means.
...The English translation:

But in German, it's a single word. :)👍
And in Russian (where words on average are longer than in English) it would be even shorter: 777 777. :)
Right, Kostya?
@mikeone": Thanks.Indeed, what a shame :-[
The font name is also "Georgia" in german language. ;)

2.

So wouldb't it be better to use
Anzahl \"aller\" Nachrichten für jeden Ordner in der Ordnerliste

Yes, but sorry: missing ")" at the end...@Kostya:
It was me, who forgot it in my first suggestion. I'm sorry.
1. I did not use the termGood suggestion.
Ordner "Ordnername" (eng.: folder "name of folder"), I used just Ordnername (name of folder). Just shorter.
I noticed that there are some places in AquaMail, where the long version is used. If you want, you can adapt my suggestion.
2. Term "Undo""Rückgängig" is commonly used and should be appropriate.
Unfortunately there is no short term for this in german language. Usually in software translated as "Rückgängig"
3. "Ausgeklappt" vs "Erweitert"I agree with your suggestion.
In software translations you will find both for "expanded". Since "Erweitert" is more irritating users because of kts several different associations, I would prefer "Ausgeklappt"

- Usual term in web development: "Texthintergrundfarbe " or "Text-Hintergrundfarbe"

In technological environments (!) the term "to highlight" is often use as "mark/select text for editing". If I highlight ((select, mark) a text, I want to make it bigger, bold, italic or something else.
Also in AquaMail
- First action: you have to manually "highlight" the text (color changes to default highlight color)
- Second action: you choose the color you like - this is what we are currently translatingQuoteHowever, I agree with your suggestion:Thank you very much. :)

I'd rather prefer "von Anhängen", it's a more general expression. And it ks analogue to the other string about caching attachments.
