Attaching source XMLs for English and German, if someone wants to fix the inconsistencies with "Mail" vs. "Nachricht".

Please a plain text editor (i.e. not Word, WordPad, or WordPerfect) that understands UTF-8.

For Windows: Notepad++ and PSPad are both free.

For Linux: gEdit, Geany, Sublime Text...

@mike -- I appreciate this, but it just might be easier for us both if you made all edits to the XML files and emailed me the results.

There is no hurry, take your time.

Then I'd be able to actually merge them using special tools (which show file differences and let me copy the changes), as opposed to having to copy each item into its XML file one by one, using "plain" copy / paste.
