Aqua uses Google Play Services for:

- Easier OAUTH2 for Gmail accounts (import from phone settings without having to re-enter the password)

- Push for Exchange.

You may want to install the "direct download" version, same package name, same signature, etc. but it does not depend on Play Services:

Under "direct download":

Base application (with direct purchase link and its own update checker): version 1.9.1-368

---

But the "market" (Google Play) version should be able to recover when there are no Play Services (fingers crossed...)

One more question,

When Aquamail is set to autosync but the wifi or data is disabled, does it preform the autosync anyway? if so is there a way to stop that?
the reason being it should not impact the battery if wifi and data are intentionally disabled.

There is an option in Aquamail to honor or ignore the system-wide setting of syncing:
Settings -> Mail, receiving -> at the very top: "System settings" (Sync even when "Auto-Sync" is off)

hmmm i dont think that has to do weather wifi or data is on?!

this just means that it will sync if "System wide" you disabled the auto sync option.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking about the situation when the sync via the specific connection channel is disabled at the system level.

But then I am confused by your question:
"When Aquamail is set to autosync but the wifi or data is disabled, does it preform the autosync anyway".
Obviously, it cannot do any sync if there is no network connectivity.

So, I am guessing, you might be asking if Aquamail wakes up to attempt the scheduled sync.
Yes, Aquamail must wake up, because if it were sleeping, Aquamail would have no way of finding out if the network is available or not. If the network is unavailable, it cannot perform the sync, so, it goes to sleep until the next scheduled time (or other event configured to start autosync).

Also, based on the permissions, I am guessing that when, say, Wi-Fi is turned off, Aquamail may try to turn on the Wi-Fi (if that is enabled in Android settings). -- This is a standard behavior for many Android apps.

If you want Aquamail prevent from trying to sync, you need to:
1. Turn off the Scheduled Sync. The master switch is Settings -> Mail, receiving -> Scheduled Sync = OFF.
2. Turn off Push. The master switch is on the same configuration screen, "Imap PUSH" (or Exchange Push).
3. Turn off sync on events. On the same configuration screen, under "Event type", uncheck all events.

I hope this answers your question. If not, please clarify your question.

yeap this was the answer i was looking for, sorry i did not formulate the question good enough :(

on the other hand i think it would be a good idea to implement such a feature, say "don't wake up if no data or wifi" but then again i am no coder so i don't know if this is even possible :D

anyway thx for clarifying this! :)

Re: say "don't wake up if no data or wifi"

A better idea would be -- "don't wake up the phone and check mail if there are no new messages".

Or even, maybe for the Pro version - "don't check mail if there are no important new messages".

:)

Yeah yeah, make fun of a non-coder :D
