Hi

I love your app and i am trying to get a niggly problem sorted.

First some background:

I use Outlook 2010 to manage my email using a pop account with local storage and my tablet uses IMAP. I can also use webmail which again uses IMAP i think.

When i get an email this arrives in Outlook and my tablet and on webmail no problem but without me doing anything on any of the email systems the email goes to read on both the webmail and the tablet. In fact i sit there with my arms crossed and watch it as they just change from being unread to read.

Investigating this I have disabled each system in turn to see which is doing this. Not knowing much about what sync and push all mean i think that Outlook is making the change from unread to read but only to the server. They remain unread on outlook until I read them or select with the reading pane on and wait the 5 seconds i have this set to mark them as read. However, If Outlook is not running the emails on the webmail and the tablet remain as unread and if I set the email back to unread on the webmail system or the tablet then the read status remains on both correctly regardless of Outlook running or not.

Please help!

Regards
Mark

UPDATE: I started Outlook in safe mode and as soon as I do the emails on the webserver and tablet get marked as read!

I'm having the same problem and it's frustrating! I am using a Galaxy S3 and am syncing multiple accounts. The Hotmail account performs properly but the others don't. One is a Yahoo account and the other I believe is pop.

The native app work properly with all accounts.

Hi

I have a load of techies working on this (I run a hosting company)

They tell me that when some email systems get the call from a pop client to download the emails to say Outlook this triggers the emails to be read. I am now told there is nothing that can be done; with our email system anyway.

The suggestion is to use IMAP in Outlook but this will in turn mean all your emails are stored on the server and if you have limited space this will eventually run out!

You could set up an Outlook account to download as pop once in say 6 months or whatever, depending on the email box size limit and your usage, and use this account as a sort or archive.

If anyone else has any better suggestions I would like to know.

Thanks

Mark

Quite strange. That's not normal behavior for POP3 AFAIK.

Ghost4u - Yes, some mail servers will mark messages as read on the server when they're accessed over POP3. This is actually very common.

Now of course you'll see the change in webmail (which basically *is* your mail server), and then in AquaMail if it connects using IMAP (which has message state sync, unlike POP3).

The messages are staying unread in Outlook because I'm guessing you're using POP3 there, which does not support message state sync, so each message's unread state is tracked by Outook on its own in its local message storage.

slfolkes - Since you mention Yahoo, which should have been configured by the app using IMAP, I'm thinking this must be a different issue. I could investigate if you recorded a debug log capturing this happening:

this is actually a fairly large problem for me as a mobile user.  I have a desktop at work that may or may not be retrieving via POP3 in an ongoing manner.  but I don't really care if it has or not... on the PHONE, if it is retrieved, I just want it to be "unread" until I mark it as such.  That's the only way I can be sure I have looked at the emails and determined whether or not I need to respond with reliability.

Is there any way to get aquamail to ignore the "read" flag from the server and and use its own flag?  or to force all incoming email flags to "unread" by default?

I can't use this program without this feature.  I seem to be happy with the rest that I've seen though.  Nice work, by the way.

Actually, last night I turned off my desktop email client, and that did NOT correct the misreporting of unread emails as "read" on my mobile aquamail... I would manually sync up, and new email would appear, but aquamail would report them all as "read".

I believe at this point it's actually some kind of bug in aquamail...

Why not provide the logs Kostya is asking?
That will help him detect when the messages are set read and why.

If it's "some kind of a bug", should I be working on "some kind of a fix"? :)
