Unable to set the password for the SMTP server in Gmail
« on: November 30, 2017, 12:17:52 pm »
Hi,

I've setup Gmail in the webbrowser using an external SMTP server. With the gmail app this works  fine. In Thunderbird I had to set the SMTP server again (it would not pickup the SMTP settings from the Gmail itself.)

With Aqua mail I noticed i had to do the same, using 'internetmail' and that worked. However, Aqua mails warns that it is safer to use OAuth. If I just us the Google account of my phone, choosing Gmail, I can set the SMTP server manually, I'm not able however to set the password, so I can't connect?

If I just choose the gmail account automatically it will use the gmail smtp server.

Right a "Gmail" account type in Aqua Mail uses OAUTH2 which is password-less.

You can use "internet mail" and specify Gmail's incoming mail server + the SMTP server you want.

This will not use OAUTH2.

The "incoming" part (logging into Gmail) will only work as long as you've got "access from less secure mail apps" enabled in Gmail settings:

The "less secure" wording just means "do not require OAUTH2, allow mail apps to log in using a password".

---

As for relative "safety" of one vs. the other - personally I don't think there is a huge difference, but the "less secure" wording is Google's not ours and the preference to use OAUTH2 is too.
