POP-3 download from Gmail missing 80% of messages

The subject line says it all.  I'm running Aquamail 1.12.0-0651 on Android Lollipop on a Lenovo PHAB.
There are no error messages, the app just doesn't download most mails.
I have no filters or other funny stuff on Gmail...
Ideas????

This is "working as intended, by design".

Not by us, but by Google.

Gmail over POP3 is tricky.
