Slow to download pictures in messages
« on: June 23, 2017, 12:07:43 am »
Coming from Gmail, Apple Mail and Hotmail clients I am finding Aqua to be extremely slow at downloading anything that isn't text. I get an email notification, open it and then have to wait anything from 15 secs up to a minute to have the full email present itself. With other clients the full email opens immediately. What gives?

This behavior isn't normal.

You could try - as a first step - to compact the database:

-> go to the app's main window (account list view) -> Menu button (three-dots icon) -> tap on the item 'Compact the database'

Could you provide some additional information:
1. Does this happen on Wi-Fi or on mobile network?

2. Are those images - remote or come with the message: attached to or embedded in the message?

3. Go to Settings (3-dot menu) -> About and take a look at the database sizes (there are 2 lines: "messages" ( NN Mb + MM KB) and Contacts: XX KB + YY KB)
Please, let us know what those sizes are (especially from the first line, "messages")

4. What are you sync settings: 3-dot menu -> Mail,receiving ->
  a) "Messages to sync"
  b) "Messages to chache"

5. What do you have set Under Settings (3-dot) -> Network -> in the section "WIFI SETTINGS":
  Load when checking mail  ?
and in the section "Mobile Data Settings":
 Load when checking mail ?

6. What are you settings for: Long press on the account name (in the account list view) -> Options and Folders -> Preload ->
 a) Attachements, WiFi
 b) Embedded images, WiFi

You can set the app to preload *embedded* images (which are part of the message itself) -- by long pressing on the account -> options and folders -> preload.

For linked images, it's just out of our control.

There may be apps that fetch the linked content themselves (and store that and everything else in their "cloud"), but Aqua doesn't work like that.

And therefore, the load speed of *link* images depends on your networking + the web server which serves those images.

To followup on your response: Your settings seem to be reasonable, nothing that would warrant a slow response (from Aquamail's side).

As Kostya pointed out that you can enable preloading embedded images, - and that's
6(b) setting that I was asking you about:

6. What are you settings for: Long press on the account name (in the account list view) -> Options and Folders -> Preload ->
 a) Attachements, WiFi
 b) Embedded images, WiFi
6) 500/500

Rather than this, - the slowness might be caused by too many other apps running and using up RAM (so that Android has to free up some RAM first, before loading your message).
To test this, you can try looking at the same message after rebooting the phone.
(There could be still too many apps running on startup -- automatically.)

Yet another reason could be if you have very little free space on your internal storage.

Thanks for your help. Increasing the embedded image preload to 5Mb fixed it. The app defaults are way too low. Love the app!
