I just tried "protect privacy" in an Office 365 account - as far as *displayed*, it wasn't, just "one unread message" in a notification.

Can you describe in more detail?

I'm sorry, special settings were enabled for this account (without protect privacy).
AquaMail "protect privacy" is working as expected.
