(request) Keep sent emails in Sent Folder
« on: May 09, 2017, 07:03:53 pm »
Either I'm doing something wrong, or I'd like to request a feature/functionality.

I love conversation view. That I can see in a collapsable view all the emails related to a conversation, including my Sent emails is intuitive, easy to read and easy to manage.

Once you swipe the entire conversation, everything goes away.
When a new email arrives, the entire thread is back for me to easy follow up and manage.

What I would looooove to see happen is for the emails I have written, to stay in the Sent Folder after I archive the entire conversation.

What happens to me right now is that when I archive an entire conversation, all the emails in the thread, including mine, are sent to the Archive folder.

Is there a way for the following things to happen simulatinously:
1. my written emails (new emails, replies and forwards) all stay in the Sent Folder.
2. my written emails are still viewed as part of the conversation.
3. Archived conversations are sent to Archive but my written emails stay in the Sent Folder.

thanks,

So in other words, you'd like only "incoming" messages to be move to archive?

I believe we already have this written down as an idea for future versions.

To Paris.
In my Exchange inbox, I've added a folder named Archive and I've setup Aquamail so that by swiping emails, they'll be marked as read and sent to this folder inside my inbox.

This allows for me to have in Exchange a clean inbox and yet see conversations with coworkers. I send 6 month old emails to a separate folder called Data files with file extension .pst. These .pst repositories are local to your computer and invisible to the Exchange email server. Since I want to have relatively recent conversations handy, I use the Archive folder with Aquamails archive function.

To Kostya, yes please. I love conversation view, but would love to keep my written emails in the Sent Folder but for Aquamail to keep showing me the conversation stack as it's currently implemented.

Keep up the amazing work, I became an overnight fan of your app.

Just a "friendly" bump to this thread. Has this been taken into consideration?
This morning I was looking for an emai I just KNEW I had sent and couldn't find in my Sent folder.
took me 10 very aggravating minutes to remember the emails I write are sent off to the Archive folder.

Please keep my sent in emails in the Sent email folders.
I can confirm that conversation-view **does work** with emails accross different folders (some in Inbox, some in Archive, some in Sent).

No news sorry.

What should happen with other commands / actions, such as: mark read/unread, star / unstar, move to some other folder?

Should they also be applied to incoming messages only? Should that be configurable?

Or only move to deleted? Move to spam? Move to archive?

First of all, - moving is the only function that is specifically different for the "sent" messages. So, the rest of the changes applied to the thread should not be affected, methinks.

Second, - regarding moving, - that should be an option (and better be per account).
I have accounts, where I have "sent" messages stored in the files that correspond to the topic or correspondent, and there are accounts, where all Sent messages are kept in "Sent".
For the former, - I'd use the option "move sent messages from Sent with the conversation chain". For the latter, - I'd use the option "keep sent messages in Sent (while moving the incoming)".

In any case, one has to distinguish sent messages being in Sent and those already filed in a different folder. I.e. if I've moved all the messages pertaining to the conversation to a different folder, and then I am moving the entire conversation to yet a different folder, - the entire chain should go.

Or let's say it's "moving only" (and not "star / unstar" etc.)

But then should it affect any or all of:

- Move to deleted folder
- Move to archive folder
- Move to spam folder
- Move to some other folder?

All of these moving operations should be treated the same way. (It took me some time to think if "deleted" should be different... Maybe for that, "Sent" messages should not be moved in any case?)
And the sent messages (if configured that way) should not be moved only if they are in "Sent" folder, as discussed in the quoted text below.

OK, I'll add this to our "task tracker". This is actually quite useful, thank you all.

Hi Kostya. I installed (and purchased) your app this morning, and spent the entire day playing with settings, haha! It is my new favorite app of all time. I love customization and this is the most customizable app I have ever seen. Thank you!

I think I can help with this particular topic. In Gmail, I am pretty sure that the only thing archive does is to remove Inbox labels. That's it!!

So when you archive a conversation, the logic is a follows:
For each message in the coversation:
      - If the message has an inbox label then remove it
      - Else do nothing!!

It's incredibly simple, but I believe that is the correct behavior. Messages with a sent label, or any other label, should retain them.

This is super important to me. Your app is awesome and it's going to be my main mail app, but for now I am keeping the gmail app next to it. I only use the gmail app to archive conversations lol. I can't wait to get rid of it! :)

I hope I've helped with the logic, and I really hope you can add something like this. Thanks again for the awesome work!

Re: In Gmail, I am pretty sure that the only thing archive does is to remove Inbox labels.

That's Gmail which is pretty unique in its labels / folders mechanics :)

For other mail providers we actually have to *move* the message(s) into the respective Archive folder.

You did. We do have this in our "task tracker", but I can't say when it might "bubble up".

But I have a better understanding now compared to before, thanks to everyone who replied here.

Thanks Kostya for the quick reply!! I agree, gmail is unique. But so much more logical tho, allowing any message to be tagged with any number of labels which can be edited at any time, rather than making the message reside in a single folder and having to *move* it another single folder.

Gmail is not some strange unheard of mail server with 15 users lol, I'm guessing it's probably the most used mail server in the world (or close to it). I'm a bit surprised that supporting gmail isn't higher priority.

I would agree that GMail is not quite the underground thing only the cool kids have heard about, but EVERY OTHER email service, specifically Microsoft Exchange, still work under the old philosophy or managing by folder rather than tag.

I would appreciate if the Archive function in Acquamail could move all emails to the designated Archive folder with the notable exception of the Sent folder.

thanks!
