All those "pale" messages are "marked as read" already.

And if your next question is -- "why does the app receive them like that" -- I'd guess that you're using a desktop mail app to connect to this account as well, and this mail app uses POP3 to do its job. If you can switch this desktop mail app to use IMAP instead, then when it fetches mail, the "unread" state of your messages will be preserved.
