How to use a backup from smartphone on tablet?
« on: January 08, 2017, 12:46:15 am »
Hi guys,

First I want to say, that I love AquaMail. In my eyes the best email app ever!

I also love the backup function, it works perfect if you stay on smartphone.
But my problem is, that I have made a backup of my client from my Galaxy S7 edge (6.0.1) and I want to import it on my SM-T520/ Galaxy tab pro 10.1 (4.4.2).

Smartphone uses 1.7.1-88 and tablet uses also 1.7.1-88.

But tablet app does not find smartphone-backups. I tried Onedrive, Google Drive, SD Card it just do not want to use the backups. The backups work perfect on my phone, but not on tablet. Backups I made by tablet, work on tablet without problems.
WHY? Same app versions, so it should work!?

How do I get backups from mobile to work on tablet?

Please copy the backup file (it's up to you how to you do it, you can use a file manager or cloud storage) between the devices.

The default location is <root of user storage partition>/backup/AquaMail

I'm guessing you might be trying to use <a real microSd> on the tablet?

Or if you use cloud based storage:

When making backup, please enable "copy to ... OneDrive" for example in the backup dialog (the one where you enter the password). The app will (should) take you to OneDrive app and you will need to select a folder for the upload and confirm.

At this point please verify that the file does get uploaded to OneDrive using their web site or OneDrive app.

Now on the other device, please tap "copy from OneDrive" and AquaMail will (should) take you into the OneDrive app where you should be able to select the backup file.

Then it will (should) prompt you for the password and actually restore.

At what point does something go wrong for you? What happens exactly?

Thx for your answer, but I know how backup works.
I can create backups with mobile, upload them and import them on the mobile. But if I check the cloud folder with the update with my tablet, it does not find a backup file. But I can see and import them with the mobile.
So it looks like the mobile phone backups are not compatible with my tablet.

I do not see the problem. App versions are the same. Only difference is, that mobile is 5.5" with 6.0.1 and tablet is 10.1" and 4.4.2

Marc

Your tablet has Android 4.4*, and that's a big difference, at least as far as it concerns the microSD card.
4.4* have the most restrictive access to the external card for the non-system program.

Here is what you can try (and I am not sure if this will work or not). Using Android's own "Files" app, try accessing the backup on the external card, and if you see it there, try copying it to anywhere on the internal card. If you can do that, then try to import that backup in Aquamail from the backup file on the internal drive.

I don't know about cloud folders on 4.4*.

I dialed into the 'back up restore' feature last night for the first time after a few years and about 5 phone data transfers and manually adding 5 accounts each time. Awesome feature.

I did find it a little bit confusing. But I got it done with some creativity. Recommend design change:

1) When I pressed 'Restore' for example, I never got any notification anything was being done -just a static page, no spinning wheel, no 'in progress' message ,etc.

2) I had a problem identifying where the file would go when I performed a backup using Dropbox - never gave me the option to save to a folder it seemed? I had problems doing that.

3) I traced where the folder was going, and manually did a copy + paste to another folder, and was able to source that folder during a restore, somehow.

One can also email the file easy enough, and do something similar creatively. Load it onto your PC from and hookup your tablet to the PC, and restore from the location you identify on your tablet. Be creative and you can find a way.

Well I tried different options. Onedrive, Dropbox, Googledrive always the same issue.  Also created backup on mobile and send it via email, then opened email and saved backup file on tablet. But if I go to the download folder, app tells me no backup file found.

Any other ideas?

I just tried backing up to Dropbox and restoring from there, the whole thing worked (but I used a phone with Android 6.)

Are you not able to pick the file in the DropBox app? This is if if you tap "copy from" on Aqua Mail's "backup and restore" screen.

Re: finding an existing backup file

Aqua Mail looks for its backup files under (and saves backups there too):

<large built-in storage>/backup/AquaMail

The filename is AquaMail.accounts.backup.

ok again...

creating backup on the phone, save file (does not care where) and restore the file works. It also works on the tablet, if the file was created by the tablet app.

But I cant restore a backup file on the tablet, which was created by phone.

Are you talking about this:

--- But if I check the cloud folder with the update with my tablet, it does not find a backup file ---

So the backup file is not visible in the cloud app? Is it there in the cloud, if you use dropbox.com / drive.google.com / onedrive.com or their Android apps (outside Aqua Mail?)

Ok I got it to work.

uninstalled Aquamail again and reinstalled.

Then checked onedrive for the backup file from phone, ondrive tells me, that there is a file in the folder, but if I open it, there is no file shown in onedrive. If I select the folder also Aquamail tells me that there is no file.

Then I checked the google drive and surprise, backupfile is visible and I was able to restore.

Very strange!?  If I open Onedrive itself, I see the files. But if I access onedrive via Aquamail restore, no files visible!?

Well ok.. it works now. Thx for help.

It's OneDrive filtering the file out based on its MIME type. Worked before.

I added a workaround recently, it's in the 1.8-dev versions.
