I think you are looking for this option to enable:
Settings (3-dots) -> Message Notifications -> Turn Screen on (in the middle of the list of options).

For Android 6.0+, the option was removed because of compatibility issues.

In this case, I recommend using this app to enhance your notifications, it does have a setting to turn the screen on, and it’s been verified as working:

Thank you, you're so kind,
I remember that I read this function in the past,
Now I tried the version 1.7.0-73 and even 1.6.9-22 but neither I find this feature,
"Turn screen on" there is not in Settings -> Message Notifications

yet I wear glasses !!

Alternatively, I recommend "Floatify" for all customization regarding notifications (including screen on):
