Stop email being deleted after read on the PC
« on: July 13, 2016, 05:29:19 pm »
Hello,

I'm quite confused by what is happening and hoping someone here can help. I just started using AquaMail and like the interface.  What's happening is this:

I look at AquaMail and see I have several new emails.  Whether I read them or not, as soon as I turn on my PC and download the new emails to my email client there (on my PC it's set to delete from server), the emails disappear from AquaMail.  Oddly, emails dated prior to June 30th are in the deleted folders, even ones that have been read and deleted from the server via my PC!  I bought my phone on July 5th...

Clearly I have some settings wrong. I liked that on my iphone, once I got them on the phone they stayed so I had the freedom to read or respond from either phone or PC.   I've read the FAQs and searched the forum, but can't locate an answer.

I appreciate your help!

There are several different solutions.
What I would recommend is to not delete on the server in your PC program.
Additionally, change the type of connection on your PC to IMAP (if it is set as  POP3).
Your phone app reflects the state on the server, as a "window": what's deleted on the server is deleted on the phone.

Okay, that makes sense.  Thanks for your reply.

Is there anyway of getting the 100+ messages back off the PC and loaded back on my Aquamail on the tablet?  I've reset the PC Outlook 2010 to not delete the messages off the server unless deleted.  And all the messages are still on the PC.  But now I would like to get the messages all back onto my tablet.

I have not used Outlook much, but I think it should allow you doing that, if the type of your connection from the PC to the server is IMAP.

If it is set as POP3, - you might consider setting up a new account (a duplicate of the current one) in Outlook with IMAP connection (if your e-mail provider allows that -- most major providers in the US do), and then copying your messages to that new Outlook account to bring them back to the server. (Note that you'd basically have to Outlook accounts connecting to the same e-mail account at your Provider's mail server.  Prior to copying, - disable automatic download in your POP3 account.
Once the messages are back on the server, you can connect with your tablet or phone, using Aquamail.
(And again, I'd recommend setting your account in Aquamail as an IMAP one.)

Just in case:
If you present account is set as POP3 in Outlook, and you'll be setting up another one with IMAP3, you may want to check if Outlook allows moving messages between accounts.
Thunderbird does allow that; I don't know about Outlook.

I don't think Outlook will let you change the "protocol" of an existing account.

So perhaps it's best to 1) add your account into Outlook again making sure it's IMAP 2) copy/move your old messages into IMAP (if it's possible) and then 3) turn off mail checking completely in the POP3 "version" of your account

Without the last step -- most mail servers will mark as read any messages retrieved over POP3, and then this "already read" state will sync into AquaMail. Probably not  desirable.

I don't think I suggested that, but I apologize if my writing was not clear enough.

Just in case: I think I've covered that last step too (see the quotation above), but I guess the way you formulated is more succinct.

(@Kostya: I have no problem with your confirming my suggestions, I am just pointing out there is no contradiction. All is fine.)

Didn't mean you haven't :)

Re: Mark read

It's just that there have been sooo many cases over the years of "AquaMail randomly changing messages from unread to read" :)
