Problems connecting when moving from one connection to another
« on: February 09, 2016, 12:08:03 am »
Kostya -

I've been using AquaMail for several years, but am new to the forum.  It's been my go-to app email app for a long time, but recently I've been having a lot of connection errors.  It seems to happen most frequently if I go from one wifi network to another.  I have a network in my office, but when I go to the restaurant in our building, there's a public/unsecured wifi that I access.  I can get on the internet with a browser, and even check mail with Gmail (which I don't often use).  But for some reason Aquamail doesn't want to play along.  But, when I return to my office everything works again when I rejoin the network.  It also happens at home, when I go from one wifi network/repeater to another.  It's very frustrating, and a restart won't solve the problem.

My hosting provider is Rackspace, and I am set to imap, with SSL and inbound port 993, outbound is 465

I recently tried to change settings to SSL accept any, but no help.

Wondering if you have any ideas on why it seems to be failing to connect.  On AM version 1.6.0.11

What do the error meesages say?

Do you have "push" enabled in Aquamail?
If yes, and if the Wi-Fi networks give the same private IP address (via dhcp), I wonder if Aquamail might not be moticing that the network has changed.
This is particularly likely if the different Wi-Fi networks have the same name.

Thanks for the reply.  I do have push enabled.  But the 2 networks are entirely different when at work.  Different names, etc.  The name of the networks at home are different, but it could be the same dhcp, since they come from the same router.

You forgot the main part:
What do the error messages say? Those would provide with some clues.

As for the networks:
1) Work vs. restaurant.
At the restaurant, - in your browser, - do you have to first acknowledge something on the page before you can browse (E.g. "Agree with this rules, ...")? If that's the case, - unless and until you do that, none of the programs, including Aquamail can access the internet (as opposed just the local network). In that case, while Aquamail sees that there is a Wi-Fi connection, it cannot establish connection to your server and complains about it.

2.) Home network:
Regardless of Aquamail, you might benefit from configuring your network with just one name (SSID), but that would require a different configuration on your second access point (i.e. you cannot just name both of them the same). There are tutorials freely available on the internet that describe how to do that.

Please check AquaMail settings -> network -> make sure "DNS" is enabled. It is by default, but worth checking.

Other than that, I'm afraid network issues are typically "outside" the app -- and being able to browse the web is no indication, and neither is the stock Gmail app (with a Gmail account I presume), since its traffic "looks like" http as well.

And networks at restaurants / airports / hotels etc. are often deliberately set up to only allow web browsing (so they'd be blocking IMAP / SMTP, on their specific port numbers).

If you wanted a sanity check, I'd recommend K9 Mail using identical server settings (server names, port numbers, encryption type).

Thanks for the quick reply.  I understand the connection is outside the app.  DNS is checked, so that isn't the issue.  I may try a sanity check as you suggested, since it's not just the work/restaurant scenario, it also happens on different access points in the same house.  Would temporarily disabling IMAP push possibly change things?  I don't mind going manual for a bit.  It's just the issue of not being connected at all.  Guess I can always try gmail in an emergency.

So what actually happens?

"Network error" / "connect error"?

Or some other error, such as Gmail's limit for the number of push sessions (would be seen as a login error)?

I know you mentioned Rackspace, but wasn't clear if it was happening with a Gmail account or a Rackspace account.

Are you able to manually "refresh" the account say a few minutes after the connection switch? Giving this extra time to make sure the connection really is usable by then.

What about switching between mobile and WiFi, same issue?
