Notifications not always appearing since build 1.6.0.5

Hi, 

Since the latest build I have noticed that the new message notifications do not work consistently on my sgs2.  They used to work fine but now I often go on to the phone and don't see one. I then open aquamail and can see many new messages.

I've checked each of my 4 accounts and it is still switched on (each account with its own colour).  I have the pro version if that makes any difference.

If I do a test and send an email to myself (and then quickly exit before it has time to arrive) then the notification icon triggers normally.  It only seems to be in the phone has been in standby for a while. 

I've not updated the operating system or anything.

Can anyone advise (before I log a support ticket).

Hmm, I'm not aware of any changes in my code in 1.6.0.5... There was change in Google's "notification compatibility" library in 1.6.0 vs. 1.5.9.

Do you know what AquaMail version you updated *from* when going to 1.6.0.5? 1.5.9 without conversations or an earlier 1.6.0?

So does the app actually check mail when it's in the background (sounds like it is)? Just status bar notifications are missing?

Just a thought: do you usually have many notifications (icons) from various apps?

Are you aware that Android may show only some of those icons, with a sort of a plus sign icon on the very left? Could this be the case here?

Hi,   thanks fir the quick response.  I pretty much keep it up to date weekly so I guess it would have been from the immediate prior version.

It's definitely not icon overrun (with a plus).  The app is certainly checking and receiving emails in TV e background  -  it's just the notifications that fail to trigger.  I'm testing more and more as we speak so bear with me.  It us actually 2 accounts that are working and two are broken.  The good accounts are outlook.com and a private domain account.  The two accounts that are having the issue are Gmail accounts as it happens so not sure if that's a clue. 

I'm happy to run some diagnostics if it helps.  I would like to avoid reseting the whole aquamail system though if at all possible as setting up 4 accounts is a bit of a long job :-)

I love aquamail by the way so don't take this as a complaint.  It's the best mail system for Android by far.  That's why I was happy to purchase it.  I'm sure this will get sorted in the fullness of time and it's really only a minor annoyance. :-)

Hi,  I have to put my hands up.  It was all my fault.  I had (for some unknown reason)  changed the "special settings"  setting for message notification under both if my Gmail accounts to override the default and "not display"  a notification.  I must have turned it off by mistake.

Another option should be worth to check:
"Post notifications even when the application is open"

You will find this option in the general settings:
> Settings > Message notifications > scroll down... enable / disable "When the app is active"

This option can be overwritten by the special account settings:
> long press on Account name > Special settings > enable "Send notifications" > enable / disable "When the app is active"

Notifications stopped working for me very recently with 1.6.0.6.

Update: Just manually synced mail and it showed an email from about 40 minutes ago without notification.  Something is off.  May need to revert to a previous apk version.

Looked into further.  Noticed I no longer see the blue icon on action bar when it syncs so I shortened the interval from default 15 minutes to 5 minutes but still no blue icon.  Sent a test mail from another account and after about 20 minutes no blue sync icon and no new email notification.

Cleared data/cache, uninstalled and reinstalled app and it seems to be back to almost normal.

Did Android's system level "show notifications" setting get turned off for AquaMail perhaps?

This is in system settings -> apps -> tap into an app -> a checkbox labeled "Show notifications".

When off, it acts as a "kill switch" for all notifications from a particular app -- and there have been cases before where it was apparently getting turned off on its own.

I've had never had an app update disable the per app system wide notification but that's a good suggestion.  I'll check that next time I run into the issue.

Apps can't change this setting. The idea is that it's something that only the user can change.

But there have been cases where it was found to be off, apparently changed on its own...
