Too Many Simultaneous Connections
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:07:53 pm »
First let me say how wonderful AquaMail Pro is!  I love the functionality and the interface!

I have one nagging issue:  here where I live I am covered with 3G Data Service and spots of 4G Service as the system is being upgraded.  In addition I use WiFi hot spots (including my own access point at my home) wherever possible.

Periodically as I leave a 3G area and go into a 4G one or vice-versa OR as I go from mobile (3G or 4G) to WiFi I get an annoying error:  NO Too Many Simultaneous Connections.  This is for my GMail account and my Lavabit account.  This error condition lasts for 10 to 15 minutes and has an annoying notification that chimes repeatedly twice in a row (as it fails on each account, I presume?) about every 3 minutes.  I can clear it by shutting the phone down for 10 minutes and then logging back in when I turn it on - apparently one of the simultaneous connections has expired.

Is this a fixable error or does the problem exist with both of my email accounts?  As I said, the notification is annoying and I don't get any mail while it is doing this.

Thanks for the good work on the app and I look forward to future improvements.

Hi,

Gmail has a hard limit for the number of simultaneous connection, it's 10 per account, all apps on all devices count. There is no way around this limit, it's imposed by the server.

When you switch connectivity, and especially when using push, all existing connections are severed, but it takes time for Gmail to notice that they're gone.

Suggestions:

- Use fewer folders in push mode, since each requires a server connection

- Turn off error notifications in my app (added recently, 1.2.4 has it for sure).

Many thanks for the response.  I will look into reducing the number of folders since I don't use Google folders that much anyway (I download all mail locally using Thunderbird & keep my own archive there).

Keep up the good work!

unfortunately, the problem is still present for many devices with 2-3 google accounts with push service on.
for example mozilla thunderbird has settings that allow you to specify the number of Cached IMAP connections to use on a mailbox, the default being 5. you can set it up to 1 and it's all fine.

The connection limit on Gmail's side is 15 per account, enforced when logging in.

Not per device, per account, and counting all apps including Thunderbird, K9 Mail and any other IMAP app (and not counting the native Gmail app for Android, of course).

If you're suggesting I implement something like TB's "Cached Connections" -- well, each push (IMAP IDLE) folder needs its own connection, that's just how IMAP IDLE works. And above that, Aqua uses only one connection per account.
