Keeping Messages Loaded in App
« on: March 08, 2015, 06:09:09 pm »
I'm a bit confused about the way something is working.

I have an exchange account set up and have a few folders set to sync as incoming.  In account settings, messages to sync is set to default (25).  In my "open items" subfolder that I have set to sync as incoming, I have messages to keep set to 100.  Currently I have 53 message in my open items folder.  I can load all of the items and scroll through all 53 messages.  But, as soon as I sync at the account level, aqua deletes all but 25 messages and the additional messages no longer appear in the smart folder.  To see those messages again, I have to reload them.

If I have messages to keep set at a folder level, it sure seems to me like it should keep those messages and not only keep the number of messages set in the account default.

If I set the account messages to sync to 100, then it does keep all 53 messages in my open items when I do a sync, but if I want to manually download messages from a non synced folder, I have to download 100, which I'd prefer not to in some cases.

Am I missing something or is this a bug?

Not a bug. The "messages to sync" controls how many messages are synced -- i.e. loaded onto the device and kept up to date (with respect to read/unread/starred changes on the server... and not having been deleted).

And that's exactly what the app shows when you open a folder's message list or the smart folder. Only those messages that are known to be up to date.

The rest (up to "messages to keep") are not deleted, they are just not shown, since their state (and existence) are not known. When you scroll down to "load more", however, those "kept" messages are used to speed up this process (the "load more").

Thanks for the reply, but still a bit confused.

If I want to up to 100 messages from my "open items" folder displayed in the smart folder, what's the best way to do that?  I'm going to have to set messages to sync to 100, right?   But, then it's going to sync 100 messages from any folder that I download messages from.  With that setting, if I go into some other folder that's not typically synced, I'm going to have to download 100 messages in that folder and that may cause a lot more downloading/battery use than I may otherwise have wanted.

It'd be nice if the messages to keep per folder setting allowed those messages to be displayed in the smart folder.

Or is there some better way to do this?  Hope I'm making it clear what I'm looking for and what the issue is

>> I'm going to have to set messages to sync to 100, right

Yes

>>  if I go into some other folder that's not typically synced, I'm going to have to download 100 messages

Yes

>> messages to keep per folder setting allowed those messages to be displayed in the smart folder

It would be "confusing" and "irritating", since those messages (beyond the sync "event horizon") would potentially have wrong read/unread/starred state, or potentially not present on the server anymore.
