Emails on Server being deleted
« on: January 15, 2015, 09:03:34 pm »
I am new to Android, having used Apple products before. My problem is that emails on my Comcast server get deleted after a few days even though I have set my preferences there to never delete read or unread messages. AquaMail seems to keep messages on my Samsung Note 3, but how do I keep from having messages get deleted automatically from Comcast? I travel and want to be able to keep my messages on the server even after I have downloaded them to my phone so that when I return home after a month or so I can still download all my messages from Comcast to my desktop (Macintosh). When I used an Apple device this way, there was never a problem and all my messages were retained on Comcast, but since switching to Android and AquaMail, this problem has developed. Thanks for any help.

Good question. I did have the standard Android Mail program a while back but removed it because I thought it was causing the mail removal from my server. So at this point, I have no other mail program running on my phone. And yes, I have checked my server, several times, and every day a few more mails are dropped off the bottom of the list. BTW, I am using a Pop3 server, if that makes any difference.

On my computer (iMac running OSX 10.9.5) I have running Apple's Mail, and it collects my mail just fine. But if I am away from my office for several days and emails have disappeared off of the server, then they don't get downloaded on to my computer. That is the problem.

I do delete emails in AquaMail and they go to a deleted mail folder where they remain. I have not emptied that folder, but emails that I wished to keep on the server disappear after a few days. And not only ones I have read, but ones I have not read as well.

BTW, I am running Android version 4.4.2.

Does the messages disappearing (only)  from the 'Deleted'  folder, or even from other folders (Inbox, Archive, ...)?

Messages don't disappear from the Deleted folder or any other folder on my phone since I have not emptied the Deleted folder. They disappear only on the server at my ISP.

Sorry,  that's what I tried to ask:

Does the messages disappearing (only)  from the 'Deleted'  folder, or even from other folders (Inbox, Archive, ...) -  from webmail service at your ISP -
 :D

Email messages disappear from my Inbox on my ISP server. They have not been moved to Trash, and there is no Archive at my ISP -- I wish there was. In fact, I wish there was a way to Archive my email messages from within AquaMail, like sending them to DropBox where they would not be deleted, except by me when I decide.

I removed all mail accounts from the stock mail app already. I specifically did not sign up for a Gmail account. No other mail program is running. My ISP mail account is set to never remove any unread or read mail.

So it's not AquaMail. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and go back to Apple -- things just worked fine.

I can only confirm what has already been said -- Aqua does not delete messages from the server when it checks mail.

It only does this when the user wants it to -- for a POP3 account, this means moving to deleted first, then purging the deleted folder. Or if you do Menu -> Delete immediately on a message (bypassing the Deleted folder).

Not going to question what you're seeing... anything is possible, but I'm as sure as can be.

That being said, maybe you'd like to try the more modern IMAP, Comcast provides it on request:

https://xcsignup.comcast.net/onboardingapps/imap

You will also need to add the account into Aqua again, using IMAP, since the default for @comcast is POP3.

When adding the account, press Manual after entering your email / password and change IMAP to POP3 near the top.

@Kostya
I think you've meant:
"...  and change POP3 to IMAP near the top."

Yep, of course... sorry!

Change POP3 to IMAP.

The preset is POP3, since IMAP is "by user request" (and has been for the last two years or so, it seems).
