Smart Folder does not show all starred mails anymore

Since the Material Design upgrade, my Smart Folder doesn't show starred mails older than 1 week anymore...

In the old version, I had it show alls mails from the last week, plus all starred mails (even if they're older). Apparently, this doesn't work anymore, unfortunately

Is this a known issue or am I missing something?

The smart folder never showed starred messages beyond the "sync window" that you'd see if you opened a particular folder (regular folder, not smart folder).

With Aqua being a mobile app, it keeps up to date a limited number of messages (per folder). The smart folder only applies a filter to those messages, it will not go back and load older starred messages (currently not visible, beyond the "sync window"). It's always been that way, since 2011 or so, and has nothing to do with the (re)design.

What you may want to do is increase the account's "messages to sync" (long press the account -> options and folders -> account options). Please be reasonable and don't go to "thousands" with push mail or 5-minute mail check interval.

That is interesting. I'm positively sure that the Smart Folder behaved differently in the past. I always had a list of all "normal" mails for the past week, and followed by all my starred mails from the last month or so.

Not sure what I did to change this. I'll play around with the "messages to sync" amount and see what it does...

Edit: The amount of messages per folder was set to 250, I changed it to 1000 now. But what does this setting do exactly? Apparently, I have to change the "messages per page" as well, to make AquaMail actually download those messages... (it's currently set to 25)... or is there a better way to get older starred mails show up in my Smart Folder?

Edit2: Now I went through the inboxes of all my mail addresses and made sure that all starred mails would show up there. And now they're also in my Smart Folder again.

So by setting the "messages per folder" to 1000, that means that AquaMail will keep up to 1000 mails in each inbox folder? And if more are coming, then the oldest will be (locally) deleted?


I think the problem is probably that I got a new phone and restored an AquaMail settings and accounts backup on it. That was some weeks ago. But I didn't make sure that all of my past month's emails were actually loaded by AquaMail, that's why I had missing starred mails in my Smart Folder...

The "1000" which is currently labeled as "messages to sync" is how many recent messages Aqua downloads to the device (per folder, for each folder in the account) -- and *also* keeps them up to date every time you check mail, with respect to their read/unread states, starred states, existence even (if you delete from the server).

Yes, the excess is trimmed automatically.

But keeping "1000" messages up to date is more expensive in terms of traffic and battery use than "25" (which is the default). It's not a linear scale (because there is some fixed per-account and per-folder overhead) - but close.

I sync mails only once every hour, that's enough for me, so the 1000 mails shouldn't be much of a problem.

Well, maybe I'll reduce it to a few hundred again, that should suffice to keep all my important starred mails in AquaMail...

I mean, if I set the sync limit to 1000, AquaMail doesn't actually download all those mails instantly, or does it?
As far as I can tell, the messages are only downloaded (and only show in the Smart Folder) if I actually entered that inbox folder in AquaMail, scroll down, and hit "load 25 more mails" a couple of times...

There is an app-global "messages to sync" and a per-account setting with same name -- which can be set to either use the app global setting (and then it's labeled as "Default (xxx)") or an independent value.

1,000 once an hour is quite alright.

Yes, those messages will be 1) downloaded to the device the first time 2) kept up to date on every mail sync, with respect to their flags and existence.

There is a "messages to keep" setting. These is the "even horizon" for trimming messages from the device's storage. Normally it's a higher value than "messages to sync" -- so that if you scroll down a folder, beyond the current "messages to sync" (up to date) -- the app doesn't have to download all those older messages, just check if they still exist and refresh their flags.

If the "messages to sync" is larger (as it is for you, as I suspect) -- no trouble, the app just won't store any extra messages beyond how many it's told to keep fully up to date ("sync").

Ok now I think I understand the problem.

I have the german version of the app, and I think there is a translation problem / ambiguity.

For each account, there is a setting called "Nachrichten pro Seite" (which translates to "messages per page") and a setting called "Nachrichten pro Ordner" ("messages per folder"). And "Nachrichten pro Seite" is also a global app setting.

I never touched "Nachrichten pro Seite" because I thought it is a setting purely for visualization (hence the name "per page"). (Its on the default 25 for me.)
But now I suspect that this setting is actually your "messages to sync" setting.

What I've been doing was playing around with the other setting, "Nachrichten pro Ordner"... apparently, this is actually your "messages to keep" setting. This is what I've set to 1000. Of course, this didn't do much, because I didn't have that many messages on my device anyway.

Now everything makes much more sense.

Edit: Maybe "Nachrichten pro Seite" should be changed to "Nachrichten synchronisieren" and "Nachrichten pro Ordner" to "Nachrichten aufbewahren". For me, that would make it more clear. It's a more literal translation of the original names of the settings. The current translation doesn't make much sense to me.

I agree with tomcat to modify the translations and prefer the following :

"messages to sync"    >  "Nachrichten synchronisieren" (instead of : "Nachrichten pro Seite")

"messages to cache"  >  "Nachrichten lokal speichern"  (instead of : "Nachrichten pro Ordner")
