Cannot save attachments.

I cannot save or view attachments any longer. I am not sure when this problem started, except that I know for sure I did view an image attachment on 23 September. If I search with the file manager* for its file name, it is not found on the device.

I get the error message:
"No place to store attachments - a memory card is needed."
The account look and feel settings are (as they are by default) <SD>download.
If I click on the setting (next to the wrench symbol), it tells me I cannot write a new file to <SD>.
If I go "up" the location shows as storage/emulated. I cannot write or see any files or folders there.

*If I use a file manager (file manager HD version 2.1.0) I have downloads in storage/emulated/0/Download. This is the location where downloads from the browser go. I can still download from the browser. There is no folder under storage/emulated called <SD> or SD.
The file downloaded on 23 Sept cannot be found.

Version of aqua mail is 1.5.0.19
Android 4.4.4 on a Google Nexus 10.
My tablet has no memory card socket. There is plenty of memory available.

Any ideas? I have accounts with companies that send me bills as PDF files, but now cannot do anything with them on my tablet :-(

Very Sorry about that!

I rebooted and all is now (apparently) well.

Still not sure how this could have happened.
So presumably not related to aqua mail.

There is still one remaining puzzle.
I can now view and download files, and can select a download location ( but have not changed it), but searching for a file name just downloaded from an email (using the file manager I mentioned) I find nothing - very odd.
Is this remotely connected with the new permissions regime in 4.4.x?
Is there a recommended and reliable file manager app?

On recent Android versions, "/storage/emulated/0" is the canonical name for the older "/mnt/sdcard".

In Aqua, if you just tap an attachment to view -- it won't be moved to the downloads folder.

If you wish an attachment to be detached from Aqua and be placed into the download folder -- long press it, choose "Save" from the per-attachment "three dots" menu, or use "Save all" at the bottom of the attachment list.

I think the older /mnt/sdcard version belongs to a version before my device. I can only recall seeing /storage/emulated/0/
What I find curious is that while I had the temporary fault, an image attachment did not have a thumbnail (I did not realise this was a fault until the problem had vanished), and I could not just view the attachment either. Instead I got the first error message I reported. It seems that whatever made it impossible to save to download also made it impossible to view*. I tried several other emails with typically PDF or jpg attachments, each of which normally offer me a choice of apps for viewing. Error message instead.

*I assume that in order to view an attachment it has to be saved somewhere temporarily, in order to detach it and pass it to the display app. Clearly this did not work either.

I am hoping this is a transient problem and won't recur!

I now have updated to 1.5.0.22.

For the preview to show, an attachment has to be downloaded first... And yet, attachments are downloaded into and cached in a "private" directory, also on the memory card / large built-in storage... So if there was a failure there, then there wouldn't have been a preview.
