Slow down?
« on: August 04, 2014, 09:40:41 pm »
It seems to me that the latest AM (1.4.1-53-beta 6) on nexus 5 4.4, takes longer than it used to to download my emails. I checked my wifi and that doesn't seem to be the problem. Am I the only one to have noticed the slow down?

By how much?

What exactly is taking longer? Which part of the sync process, can you tell?

What about the previous betas?

The time until the emails start to appear in the smart folder is what takes longer. Once the smart folder message list starts getting populated, things go faster.

I think it has been this way for quite a few beta versions.

I have 5 mailboxes on 2 domains. Spam is filtered on the server.  I only download emails when I "refresh" in the smart folder. Because I get a lot of spam (~15 every couple of hours) I enabled the spam folder to appear under "other folders" so I can clear it before it fills up too much. (Delete all goes very fast) . So at first I thought it was the spam downloading in the background into the spam folder, but I don't think so. I can't be sure but I think it just takes longer to negotiate the connection with the server. That's why I checked the wifi speed.

Browser connection is as fast as ever.

Well, a 50 megabit Internet connection doesn't mean that a mail server can keep up with that...

Is it -- until emails start to appear at all? Or the time between the headers in the message list and message body snippets?

Do you have "SSL hardening" enabled in app settings under Networking? Can you try turning it off, then rebooting the phone?

I have noticed slowness of message snippets appearing recently. At the time I blamed the connection I had (tablet tethered to iPhone, with a weak 3g signal). The slowness was not just delay to the first, they came in rather slowly one at a time. Headers were about as fast as usual.
OK my servers, connection, everything is possibly different from the OP, but thought the info would help.

On my own home WiFi I noticed another effect only once. Where a failed sync results in a red time next to the account name, I recently saw messages sync after switching on my tablet, and 1or 2 new messages were downloaded.  The time next to the account name appeared, this time in black, something like 02:19 (probably the last sync before I turned off ). The time of the messages was later than 02:19.
Calling for a sync all once more did nothing except move the rotating doughnut through each account in turn (no new messages, time still 02:19), then on a further manual sync the time updated to the real time 21:xx, and some more messages appeared.
This was a one off issue. Haven't seen it since.

Um, well. Since the very first 1.4.1, message text is sometimes (for the better servers) fetched in parallel, a few messages at a time.

Not too many, but... more than the one at a time that 1.4.0 does.

This makes fetching text much faster overall (2-4X in my tests), but can somewhat increase the delay to first message. A classic latency vs. throughput thing.

To see if this is it: long press the account -> options and folders -> IMAP options -> turn off "Enable optimizations".

It is "until emails start appearing at all".
I don't have ssl hardening enabled.
I can live with it. I'm just mentioning it because I think it is newish.

It is hard to be sure, but I now think it is possible that the apparent delay is caused by the download of messages into the spam folder as I had originally suspected. I usually download my emails by refreshing while I'm in the opened smart folder which doesn't show messages going into the spam folder.

I've been trying to keep an eye on what's really happening by downloading while I'm in the accounts view screen instead to see which folders get populated when.

Well, yes, if your spam folder(s) are set to "Sync as spam", it means the app will download messages from them when it checks mail. This is not new, it's been that way... forever :)

And if you're not including those folders in the smart folder, then you're not seeing any visual feedback on this happening.
