Special folder rename
« on: January 08, 2013, 03:39:14 am »
Kostya,

Don't suppose there's any chance we could have the option to rename the special folders? e.g. I'd like to rename "[Unsent messages]" to display "Drafts" when viewing my folders.

Thanks!

Well, I've been kind of asking myself the same question about "Unsent", but could not think of  a better name to convey that it's not just drafts, but also outgoing messages.

So, it's "sent" vs. "not sent yet, maybe because they're being sent right now, or maybe because they've been saved as drafts to send later" -- which is kind of too long :)

English is not my native language, so if you have a suggestion I'll gladly rename the folder.

Kostya,

First off, you speak English better than most Brits and American's I've known!

I see your dilemma in choosing a folder name and I think your default is just fine. If the user could rename them though to suit their particular understanding of what the folder's purpose is then that would be what I'm looking for.

Out the box I think [Unset messages] is a good a name as any I can think off. User customization would allow the customer (if they desired) to rename it 'Drafts', 'NotSent', 'Outbox' or even if the whim comes over them, 'Bob'  :P

Well, I've been kind of asking myself the same question about "Unsent", but could not think of  a better name to convey that it's not just drafts, but also outgoing messages.

Typically, mail clients have a special local mailbox called "Outgoing" or "Unsent" or similar that gets used as temporary storage for messages that are queued to be sent but have not yet been delivered. In this system, Drafts gets used only for messages that people are still writing but don't yet want to be sent, where as Unsent gets used for messages that people have actually clicked "Send" on. By combining Drafts and Unsent, this important distinction gets lost - I'd be horrified if any if the messages in my Drafts folder were actually delivered. :)

Anyway, back to the original topic - a nice, possibly simple improvement would be to just not display the square brackets around the special folders: Rather than "[ Sent Messages ]" just show "Sent Messages", or even just "Sent" (since people already know that these mailboxes contain messages, making the "Messages" part somewhat redundant).

My suggestion would be to just display the name of the remote folder being sync'ed in that role, rather than the special name - this would let users name it whatever they want.

+1 for this, in any case.

Ok, let's see:

http://www.aqua-mail.com/download/AquaMail-market-1.2.1.4.apk

- Agree that "... messages" is redundant. Removed.

- Changed "Unsent" to "Drafts", and "Неотправленные" to "Черновики" :), so it's more immediately familiar.

- The square brackets is something I feel quite strongly about, to indicate the "specialness" of these folders in the app's message processing logic.

- Those folders don't always sync with the server -- e.g. POP3, or even IMAP where those folders aren't configured to sync (for one reason or another).

Just downloaded it - looks much better, thanks!

Yeah, I understand. I would argue however that mail users either know what's going on there or don't care, so it's not terribly important to mark them. One approach other mail clients take is to use icons - normal mail boxes have a plain envelope or something, while the special ones have a custom icon, appropriate for what they are. Thunderbird uses a recycling bin for the trash mailbox, for example: http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/Mozilla-Thunderbird-Screenshot-5789.html [nofollow] I find this works quite well and is a bit more intuitive - those square brackets could mean anything.

- Those folders don't always sync with the server -- e.g. POP3, or even IMAP where those folders aren't configured to sync (for one reason or another).

Indeed, but if there is a remote folder that a special folder syncs with, the consistency would prevent a bit of confusion. Poor Exchange users have to put up with "Sent Items" being the name of their sent mailbox, when accessed over IMAP, for example.

Thanks for your work!
