Email from alias account option doesn't seem to be working

I created a main account on Aqua Mail.

I then created an Alias email address I wanted to send all my email from, outside of the default mail account.

I found the setting (in extended settings all the way at bottom) to make the alias the default mail account.

However, when I compose a message, sometimes that alias is indeed the default, sometimes it is not.

If I try to compose an email from the widget, it never goes to the alias account address even though it's using Aqua Mail directly.

Could there be something that I am doing wrong?

Is your widget set up to a specific account?

If so, new message will use that account too.

Seems logical to me, do you think it should be different?

The widget only gives you a choice of the main account, not the alias.

Also, as I previously stated, even when I have the settings set to send from alias account, it doesn't always do it.

Yes, I understand that it doesn't always do it, and the difference is using "New message" in the app vs. the widget.

But widgets can only be configured for an account, not an alias. Make sense?

Should the app use the default alias if "new message" is launched from a widget?

Only if the widget is configured for the same account as the default alias belongs to?

Or from any widget?

If the latter, what if someone has two widgets for two accounts, and needs to write messages from both (say, personal / office email)?

I'm just trying to understand what changes to make, if any.

Let's forget about the Widget.  I understand the limitations of that.

I set up Aquamail with an iMap email account that syncs with iCloud and my Mac.

But I don't want to use the icloud email address to send email.

So, I created an alias with a different email address to send mail from. 

Went into settings, scrolled way down to the bottom and selected the alias as the default account to send mail from.

When writing an email directly from the email app it does not always use the alias.  I have to select it in the box along the top.

Using "New message" from a message list uses the current account (whose message list you're viewing). I think it makes sense too.

Is this the case you're running into? If not, is there a pattern you can describe?

(and then of course there is replying -- the app detects messages sent to an alias, and will use it when replying, otherwise, will use the account... think it makes sense too).

Should the default alias be applied when using "new message" from a message list?

If so, should this logic only apply if the account of the currently open message list is the one the default alias belongs to?

I only have one email account set up.

I would think the alias automatically ties itself to that account.  The account is listed in the alias, with the new email address I designated to it.

When I create new message under the one account it does not always send from that alias, though I set it up to default to the alias in settings.

Maybe I am just missing something.

I see the problem.

You can't be in the INBOX and send an email from an alias.

You have to step out of the INBOX and then click on the pencil to send mail and it will do so from the alias you chose in settings.

What I was hoping for was that I could send an email from my alias account while in the INBOX of my main account.  Guess that is not possible.

It's strange that while in the INBOX you can still choose from either account at the top of the page, but it won't default to the account that you want.

The root of the issue is that there is nothing in the UI that represents aliases as a way to organize messages, so you can't be "in" an alias like you can be "in" a folder that belongs to an account.

That being said, I added a special case, feel free to try this test version:

When creating a new message from a folder's message list, and the folder's account is the one whose alias is chosen as the default for new messages, the app will pick up the alias as well.

This applies only to new messages --

If you reply to a message that was not sent to the alias, but rather to the account's main address, the "from" will be set to just the account without the alias. I think using the alias in this case as well would be taking it too far.

I am spreading the word about Aqua Mail in the android forums.  Many people asking which email client is the best and I have been recommending yours.

Have a friend that just called me.  He bought a Galaxy Note II.  Told me that he also found a great email program called Aqua Mail.  I laughed and told him that I was already using it.  He loves it.  Says he saw a YouTube video with a spanish guy explaining how to set it up and he's been hooked on it ever since.

I am going to go look for that video to get some tips as well.
