Something strange is going on
Can you check web mail to see how many there actually are in the inbox?
Would you please try removing the account from Aqua and adding it back?
To remove, long press the account -> choose from popup menu.
To add, Menu -> add account.
If the issue persists, please contact me at kmansoft / gmail, and I'll ask you to run a diagnostic test in the app, to see what the app gets from the mail server.
