IMAP PUSH doesn't seem to work on my Wildfire S
« on: December 30, 2013, 09:59:36 pm »
Hi, I'm not sure it it's because of my older phone or am I doing something wrong here.

I have a gmail account that doesn't want to do instant email push. I went thru every setting possible but still have no luck with instant email receive.

Phone is:
HTC Wildfire S
Android 2.3.5

Hello,

It would have been more useful to be more exact about the settings you changed, rather than "every setting possible"... :)

The settings that should be enabled are:

- App global settings, "IMAP push" (under Mail, receiving), enabled by default

- Per-account IMAP push setting: long press the account -> options and folders -> account options. This one is disabled by default.

- At least one folder marked for push. The default is enabled for the main inbox, disabled for all other folders. Account's options and folders -> folders -> scroll to inbox -> tap it  -> select "Sync as incoming" -> tap the settings icon to the right of the folder name (Incoming) -> enable IMAP push for the folder.

Back out to the main screen (account list). There should now be a status bar icon (a blue "@"), with the notification (when expanded) saying "Starting push for ...account...", and when done, it'll say "Push mail: ...account...".

Hi there-

I have the free version, and I don't see the option to turn on push for the account as described below under:
Per-account IMAP push setting: long press the account -> options and folders -> account options

IMAP push simply isn't listed there.  Is this because I have the free version?

Thanks much!

@Riese - If the option is not there at all, it means it's a POP3 account.

Is this a Hotmail account by any chance?

AquaMail uses POP3 for Hotmail unless you use Manual account setup and configure it with IMAP specifically (because of some bugs in Hotmail server, which is taking MS longer to fix than it took me to add Exchange support).

But then, using POP3 for Hotmail "sure would not be a great loss", since their IMAP server does not support IMAP IDLE, the industry standard way for push mail function.

Heck, it lacks even some of the more basic stuff, compared to your average Internet IMAP server.

Hello, I also do have problems with IMAP push. It was flawlessly working on my setup (Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, AquaMail 1.3.8 free, two Google Mail accounts) until I've updated my system from Gingerbread to Jelly Bean sometimes in December 2013 (I can not imagine any cause to email push by doing this) - suddenly no pushs from IMAP anymore. Other applications are still being pushed.

When checking the settings, everything seems to be correct:
- App global settings, "IMAP push" (under Mail, receiving), enabled,
- Per-account IMAP push setting: long press the account -> options and folders -> account options, enabled,
- Both Inbox folders marked for push (Account's options and folders -> folders -> scroll to inbox -> tap it  -> select "Sync as incoming" -> tap the settings icon to the right of the folder name (Incoming) -> enable IMAP push for the folder).

Is there anything more I could be missing? But after all, I did not switch the push off back then :(

@PeterS - does the "push mail" status bar notification not show up at all?

Your setting are all correct, there is only one more thing I'd check:

- System settings -> accounts -> make sure that the system wide "background sync" setting is allowed (enabled)

If this checks out, and still no go, please consider capturing the issue in a debug log (see my signature below).

You'll want to reboot the device after enabling logging, so it starts from a known initial state, and to keep it enabled for an hour or two.

does the "push mail" status bar notification not show up at all?
It is the blue capital "@" character, right? It appears just temporarily ("@ AquaMail - Syncing with ...."), while I'm manually syncing any account, or keeps if I allow "Settings / Mail, receiving / System settings / Sync, even if { automatic system synchronization | background data } is switched off" - then I get "@ AquaMail - Launching Push Imap: ....", finally followed by "@ AquaMail - Push mail: account1, account2" entry in the notification area.
But the push does not happen, if I have "... / System settings / Obey everything" selected here.

Your setting are all correct, there is only one more thing I'd check:
- System settings -> accounts -> make sure that the system wide "background sync" setting is allowed (enabled)
In the Android's "Settings / Accounts" area I have "Dropbox", "E-mail", "Google" and green "(+) Add account":
  • "Google" item contains two e-mail accounts, bound with my phone. Both of them show up with "Synchronisation is disabled" line below. But their regular automatic synchronization has always been disabled.
  • "E-mail" item contains the same two and one more e-mail account, all of them show up with "Synchronisation is disabled" line below.
I remember, that the sync settings looked a bit differently (how exactly? :-[) under Gingerbread, but I did not play with it anymore for nearly a year long.
Besides this, I'm not able to find anything else, which would better match anything like 'the system wide "background sync" setting:-[
(Note that my device's System language is set to Slovak, thus the translation differences could be an issue as well. BTW, is it possible to switch AquaMail to display a non-system language (like English)?)

If this checks out, and still no go, please consider capturing the issue in a debug log (see my signature below).
You'll want to reboot the device after enabling logging, so it starts from a known initial state, and to keep it enabled for an hour or two.
I'll possibly have to. But, with regard to the previous two paragraphs, my question is: where the heck is the "automatic system synchronization" or "system wide 'background sync'" settings buried???

So far, thanks for your notes...  :(

I've just found the answer in the [aquamail pro] Problems with push notifications thread. Indeed, perfectly hidden settings on an unexpected place. Even the pop-up menu has half of its strings replaced with ellipsis, even in the landscape orientation, probably for even better obscurity…  ::)

Thanks for leading me there :)

Sorry I haven't been able to check the forum for a while... But sounds like you got your answer?

Yes, the setting was under Accounts prior to 4.0, and the current location is "clearly an improvement" :)

The amazing part is -- the setting default to "on" on all new / just reset devices, and yet I see quite a number of support requests where the setting turns out to be "off".

Is there a conspiracy? Are sales people at those mobile operator boutiques being a bit *too* helpful when configuring new phones for their clients?
