1.3.0 - possible IMAP authentication failures
« on: December 27, 2013, 02:31:06 am »
Version 1.3.0 added support for CRAM-MD5 authentication (login) method for IMAP accounts.

This is the most secure way to authenticate, as it does does not require the password to be transmitted at all.

Unfortunately, there are some servers out there which claim to support this method, and yet it doesn't work. The blame for this lies with lazy or incompetent network administrators, but this issue will be seen in AquaMail as an authentication failure.

The workaround is as follows:

- Long press the account, choose Account setup, then Manual
- For new account setup, also press Manual
- Change Authorization (Authentication) from "Choose automatically" to "Prefer compatibility"

With the above change, the app will not attempt to use CRAM-MD5 even when it's advertised by the server, and will fall back to other authentication methods.
