POP incoming means cannot create local folders?
« on: December 10, 2013, 11:13:48 pm »
Hi, new user, refugee from android email app.
My isp uses POP only. Does this mean i can't make local folders e.g. 'save' & there's no sent folder either?
Thanks!

Several users have requested that capability.

Nope. For POP3, there are no local folders and won't be, in this app.

Let's just let the old dog die. POP3 is from 1996. Just think what kind of mobile phone you had back then. Things have changed.

IMAP is the modern replacement, even Comcast and Hotmail implemented it recently.

Windows 8's built-in mail app doesn't even support POP3.

I guess that as a purest tech guy you can have that point of view,  but there are some of us that could use local folders on a POP account.  My ISPs on my main home and work accounts do not offer IMAP,  only POP.  It would be nice to be able to save some email on the phone in an organized manner.  Can you suggest another app that will allow us to do this? From the number of views of this thread it appears that the OP and I are not the only ones that would like to be able to create local folders on our POP accounts.

Yes, this is how it is, and I don't see this changing.

I understand the "wants", but as far as I'm concerned, POP3 is "yesterday".

If a particular mail provider is stuck in 1996, that's their decision.

Except that mail providers do not buy your application,  or likely even read this forum.  Email users do.  And we have no choice sometimes as to what is available to us. My ISP at home is POP only.  My email account at work is POP only.  Nothing I can do about it.  So I need an app that allows for local folders on a POP account.  Do you know of of one?  I also do not understand this half-baked approach you have to POP.  If it is so archaic,  why does your app even set up for POP accounts? It does though,  and when I bought the Pro version  of an app that connects with POP I thought that local folders might be a basic feature.

"Archaic" is a good word, except I'd direct it at mail providers who keep their users stuck in 1996, and at POP3 itself.

On who buys what --  I assume you regularly pay your ISP, and it's more than the $5.- that my app costs. Don't you deserve they do better and provide IMAP?

A couple of examples: Comcast used to support POP3 only, now they have IMAP. Same with Hotmail.

Whether something is a "basic feature" can vary quite a bit between people, esp. when you might be expecting something on par with desktop mail apps.

About other mobile mail apps - I'm really not the best person to ask about this.

Since you mentioned the Pro version - feel free to contact me directly at kmansoft / gmail for a refund.

I know imap has its advantages, but so does pop. I know it is old technology but some of us still prefer it over imap.

I know Kostya doesn't like pop3, but for those of his users and supporters who prefer to use it, I wish he would just provide us the ability to put received emails in various folders. It would make us so grateful and happy.

Thunderbird does but we can't use it in android.

Kostya,

at some other place, I asked you lately if it is on purpose that I cannot create triangles for [send] in my POP accounts. Because it is Sunday, and rainy, I walked around in the AquaMail mForum and found this. Guess this answers my question...  :(

Actually, I like men with principles, but in this case principles hurt needs! I have these two POP accounts because I direct some mails (orders) to them and from there they are handled by another program to create answers, bills, etc. I have to be absolutly sure that none of the gets lost. As IMAP is "dynamic" and you made AquaMail to keep mails even on the server only for a limited time, I chose POP to make sure that nowbody touches these mails (of course, I know, there is no herb to keep NSA out  :( ), even not me, by error.  Easiest would be to delete these accounts from my phone, so that you don't get  harmed in your principles  ;), but doing so I would loose my ability to go and check what business is doing even when I'm on the road. So I will go on pester you - unless you show me a way to make sure that I can not damage, or delete mails by error when I store them in a IMAP acccount.
Götz
BTW: Of course I use AQ PRO

As IMAP is "dynamic"

Not sure what this means. I mean, I do know the word "dynamic" but in this context.

I did not.

I am really not in a position to do this.

The only way to guarantee this would be to create a mail app that has no message delete capability, or folder purge capability. I'm afraid an app like this would not be too popular.

I'm just thinking about a workarround for my wife and me. We both want to mark read the mails of our family mail account independently. I prefer imap to only need to mark it once as read (on 3 different devices), my wife prefers pop3 to mark it separately on each of her 3 devices. I think, it will end up in some forwarding to our individual accounts, but I'm not shure how to handle the sending in the name of the family account... Maybe this could also be a workarround for gpl to keep emails safe in an untouched mailaccount and forwarding.
