Push and Mail check interval; also sync
« on: December 18, 2013, 08:19:12 pm »
Hello. I'm a new AquaMail user and I have a very basic question.

In Settings, under "Mail, receiving", I have options for IMAP Push and Mail Check Interval. This is confusing. If IMAP Push is enabled, then the app shouldn't be checking for mail at intervals at all, should it? I'd expect Mail Check Interval to be grayed out when IMAP Push is enabled. Since it isn't grayed out, I must be misunderstanding something.

What am I misunderstanding?

Here's a related question. I don't see a "Sync interval" setting. As I understand it, "Push" applies to email delivery only, not to other changes, such as deletions and moving mail into folders. Is there a way to set the timing of those things?

From a battery conservation standpoint, I don't think it's necessary to have folders syncing all that often, especially when I can manually sync on demand when I have to. Is this what's included in "Mail check", or is that strictly about incoming mail?

This looks like a great mail app. I just need to have a better grasp of how it works and how to get it to run efficiently.

It's perfectly valid to have one or several folders in push mode, and the rest without push, which will then use regular scheduled mail checking.

In fact, this is what I recommend (what's the meaning of using more battery to get push into Deleted or Spam?)

Thanks. I was just trying to understand what the term "Mail check" actually means, and I gather it means what some email platforms call "Folder sync."

Is it possible to set a folder to be visible but to only update manually, when opened? It looks like the current system is that if a folder is visible, it's updated on the "Mail check" schedule.

Example: I have a Gmail folder for receipts. I seldom need to look in it, but once in a while I do. It seems like a waste of battery to be checking it every fifteen minutes or whatever, but I'd like to see it in my folder list and be able to look at what's in it every so often, as needed. Can this be done?

Should I put this question in the "How do I?" section?

Yes, a folder becomes always visible in the account list if it's set to sync.

Note that the incremental costs of syncing one more folder are small,  compared to waking up the device, establishing a connection, logging in, etc.

Still, you could access it without setting it to sync, and the app will keep recently accessed folders in the account list.

For a phone-sized device, this "recent folders" setting is initially off, so be sure to enable it (long press the account -> Options and Folders -> Account options -> scroll down -> "Show Other folders...").

That makes sense. Once a folder is synced, how can it be unsynced? I don't see a way to do that in the app.

- Long press the account
- Options and Folders
- Folders
- Scroll to a folder
- Tap it
- Choose "Do not sync"

I don't know how I missed that. I was looking at a different menu somehow. In any case, everything is working great now.

Great. Recent versions display a help screen for the account list, regarding the long press.

A pretty standard Android UI pattern, but I agree it may not be obvious, since there is no indication that a long press is available (e.g. the UI element doesn't look like a button... )
