smart inbox dates

I have had to reinstall my gmail account and re-sync. I now have 300 emails in my smart inbox despite setting it for 1 day only. The emails go back about 3 months. The problem seems to be a date related field. There used to be a date index work round. Has that gone and what can I do about getting correct emails only in the smart inbox?

It should have gone to the more expected "just one day back" by now.

When filtering for the smart inbox, the app also considers when a message was received in the app (special logic in case you go offline then come back to working connectivity, e.g. travel, vacation, etc.)
