The default - unless you specifically enable push mail for the account - is "poll" (in K9 Mail terminology).

It's best to use IMAP (again the default) even if you don't use push - it is more efficient than POP3 (if that's what you meant by "POP").

As for the "three times a day" - you can set "scheduled sync / mail check interval" in the app's settings which will apply to all accounts -- or if you have several, and only need this setting for one account, you can long press the account on the app's main screen -> special settings -> "mail, receiving" and enable account specific settings there.

Well thanks. I'm still very confused ! I cannot figure out why there's  push option if it's by default it's doing something else. You don't explain what is it doing. Put in English words what exactly the app is doing. It's not syncing on its own. But it notifies me after messages on its own and sometimes not at all. look I need to understand how it works with relation to Gmail. Is there a way I can have notification send to me 3 times a day not anytime during scheduled sync?  Again spending hours sifting through your forum and the FAQ is not helping me in any way. I'm very frustrated because Im coming from Gmail and know nothing how this app works, to help me save battery and only notify me 3 times a day only during scheduled time that I have set up. Please, I'm waiting to contact with you.

Re: Is there a way I can have notification send to me 3 times a day not anytime during scheduled sync?

I'm confused - you'd like the app to check mail just 3 times a day?

That was my understanding, but now I'm lost by your "not anytime during scheduled sync"?

"not scheduled sync" is push mail - and if you enable it, it will notify about new messages "almost" instantly. Is that what you want?

I'm not clear on how exactly you'd like things to work exactly.

If your intent is for the app to check mail 3 times a day *only* then you can set the account's mail check interval to say 8 hours or maybe 4 hours (depending on what "a day" means for you - "per 24 hours" or "during the day time").

You will not want to enable push mail then (but it is off by default).

Thank you for taking time,  but here is my question, can I get notified for new mails only 3 times a day?  I have it sync 3 times a day but sometimes I don't get notified of mail and sometimes I get notified at a different hour. So I'm not sure syncing means I get notified... Somewhere I need to instruct for notifying me at the moment it sync and not at any other time. Makes sense what I'm asking?
Thanks

The usual "procedure" is - the app notifies when it checks mail, there is no separate "notify me about new mail at ... hour" independent of when it's actually going to look for new mail.

The "checks mail" has two varieties:

- Scheduled checks - default to every 15 minutes.

- Push mail - off by default, but gets any changes (not just new mail, also messages being marked read, for example) near instantly, uses the battery somewhat more.

Normally scheduled mail checks should be quite reliable but but but....

For example, Android may decide to "optimize" the app out of being able to work in the background. Or there may not be a network connection at the time. Or Android may postpone the app's chosen time of the next mail check by an hour or more.

What I'd suggest, given all the above, is start with the default "check mail every 15 minutes" or maybe change to "30 minutes" or something. This really won't drain your battery.

The app also has a "nights / weekends" section in its settings, so you could turn off notification sounds at certain times of the day / weekends.

And then once you got used to that, maybe you'd want to tweak the setting to be "every hour" or "every 2 hours".

Does this sound like a plan?
