Authentication Error
« on: June 07, 2015, 03:21:41 am »
Hi,

I've been using Aqua Mail for a year or so, and only started having a particular authentication error problem recently (I'm not sure if I upgraded to the new Gmail security protocol and maybe the problem began then?).  I am now getting continuously an error message stating:  "Authentication Error - Outgoing Server Error 535 5.7.8.

In the outgoing settings, I am using smtp.gmail.com.  Security type SSL (strict check); Server port 465.

I do not see an option to tap on "Authentication" - therefore I can not change from "choose automatically" to anything else.  Note that I have a second Gmail account set up on the same device.  That one is working, and does show Authentication options, and is set to Choose automatically.

Any assistance is appreciated -  :o

You will be able to check account settings as follows:

> go to Account list view > long press on Account name (your Gmail account) > Account setup > tap on MANUAL (not 'NEXT') > in the next window (settings for Incoming server) tap on NEXT > there you can check all settings for 'Outgoing server'

smtp.gmail.com + SSL + 465 is the right settings for sending via Gmail.

If you go into web mail, or here:

https://myaccount.google.com

do you see any errors / warnings / notices?

I know Gmail has logic to block access if your location, based on the connecting app's IP address, moves too much too fast -- and sometimes this triggers when it's not supposed to, I've seen it when switching between LTE and WiFi (and staying in same location).

There may be other reasons too, hopefully Google's "myaccounts" page has some additional info...

Mikeone,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a problem getting to the settings pages in Aqua Mail to check the various settings. However, I'm not able to see different options (such as clicking on Authentication). In my other Aqua Mail Email account (also coordinating with Gmail), it appears the options on the settings pages seem to be a little different....

Kostya,

I logged into the myaccounts page at Google. I went into the Sign in and Security sections and found no error notifications.  I also did a complete Security Checkup.  Again, no problems.  So, I'm still confused.

Thanks,

cohenville

Hi Cohenville,

I guess that both Gmail accounts are configured as IMAP accounts.
Are both completely independent of each other or is the second one just another identity (alias) of the first?

Regards

"Authentication type" won't be there if the account uses Google's preferred authentication method -- OAUTH2 -- since there is nothing to choose from, OAUTH2 is OAUTH2.

A "Gmail / Google Apps" account type in Aqua.

I thought OAUTH2 was more, not less, reliable than sending the username / password "like in them olden days, when Henry VIII was still a wee little baby".

Could be a Google Play Services glitch.

Something to try: add this account into Aqua as an "Internet mail" account, you'll need to enter your login / password and possibly enable "access for less secure apps" in Google's Security Settings on the web.

( "less secure" is what they call it when mail apps send the username / password, like they've been doing for ages... as opposed to using Google's new special way to authenticate, OAUTH2 )
