Contact Picker
« on: December 14, 2016, 06:40:40 pm »
This may or may not be a bug, but this seems to be the best place to post this issue.

I've been using AquaMail Pro for quite sometime now and recently (without making any setting changes in AquaMail Pro or my Contacts) when I start a new e-mail and type the first few letters of my name (I'm sending an e-mail to one of my personal addresses), my name longer displays in the Picker list.

So I added a new contact using just my name and Hotmail address and that entry does display in the Picker list. Any ideas as why my contact info that listed under "Me" in my phone's contact list no longer displays in the AquaMail Pro Picker list?

The "me" entry ("owner's profile") was never part of the app's auto-completion or the contact picker.

Android stores this information separately from other contacts, and it's just a bit too much of a pain to load it separately.

But in terms of any actual changes in the app - none, the "me" entry was never offered there. You must have had a "real" Contact with your own address.

Did you mean to say "no longer displays"? or rather "does not display"?

Aquamail displays names/addresses that are in contacts list and in its "collected" list (those addresses to which you've sent messages). (I don't remember, but there is probably a configuration option for the latter.) So, unless your address is in one of those lists, it would not show it.

Yes, "no longer displays" is correct.

Actually, my Hotmail address was showing up in the Picker list for quite sometime. I send quite a number of web links (to be accessed later) via the Share option in several apps.

So if the "me" entry ("owner's profile") was never part of the AquaMail's auto-completion or the contact picker, then it must have listed because it's an address that I've sent messages to.

However, after sending a couple of e-mails to my Hotmail address by manually entering the full address, it still doesn't list in the auto-completion or picker.

UPDATE: I just installed the latest AquaMail Pro update Version 1.7.1-88, but I don't it's related to what is now occurring.

I went to "Settings > Contacts > Recent addresses" and checked the box (True). I then closed AquaMail and relaunched and initiated a new e-mail and tapped my Name as listed in the SwiftKey predictive text list and two of my three (Me) addresses displays in AquaMail's Auto Complete/Picker list - my Hotmail address doesn't list, which is counter intuitive because I usually sent to my Hotmail address and rarely the other's that are now listing. A third address also, displays but it's list under my (Me) information - it's my old work e-mail address.

What's also interesting is my two (Me) addresses & the third old address have what looks like "timer" icon next to them. The icon looks like clock hands enclosed in a partial circle/arrow. My father's e-mail address (we have the same name) also shows up in the list, but it doesn't have the icon. I haven't received anything in years from that address, which may explain why there's no icon.

If I revisit "Recent addresses" and un-check that box, then none of my (Me) addresses or my old work address displays in the Auto Complete/Picker list.

Re: my (Me) addresses or my old work address ... does not display ... when "auto-complete recents" is off

This just means that there are some messages (loaded by the app and still stored on the phone) that mention those addresses, so the app finds and offers them.

I decided to change the "Settings > Contacts > Recent addresses" back to "False", which I believe is the default.

At any rate, I'm 100% certain that my (Me) Hotmail address and possible the others were displaying in the Picker list until a few days ago. Not sure why it doesn't now. Since I have't changed any settings, I can only conclude that it's a result of an application update.

That said, if I enter the first couple of letters of my (Me) Hotmail address, fortunately SwiftKey offers it as an autocomplete option, which is an acceptable alternative.

I'm certain that this app, Aqua Mail, never had the logic required to pull the "Me" entry from Contacts and offer it for auto-completion.

At the risk of sounding argumentative, I would like to say the following because it's starting to sound a bit like "gaslighting."

I have no position on or claimed knowledge about AquaMail's code logic, but after using AquaMail for several months and sharing web links with my Hotmail address (which was only listed under my Me contact info) pretty much on a daily basis. It was plainly obvious when it suddenly disappeared from the auto-complete/picker list.

When a user repetitively performs a relatively straightforward user action, it's not an illusion when something changes in the user interface. This is not to suggest in anyway that it's the "fault" of AquaMail, but the functionality did change.

My current workaround is to enter a 2nd entry in my Contacts that includes my Hotmail address.

When a developer who wrote the relevant code says that there was never a particular piece of logic in that code, so nothing could have possibly gotten removed, since it wasn't there in the first place --

-- it's not an illusion either.

But "something", "somewhere" could have changed.

Tales from support (tm):

Just recently someone's *all* contacts became unavailable to Aqua Mail's autocompletion -- "after the new version update" of course :)

And then this user went into Google Contacts on the web, and discovered that somehow all his contact entries got removed from the "My Contacts" group. He didn't do it, what happened? We'll never know.

He put the entries back and his autocompletion began to work again. Had nothing to with Aqua Mail.
