Mail view not showing correct
« on: November 06, 2014, 03:13:57 pm »
I have a problem with view of pure text files.

I send me some stats of my mail server every day. In K-@ Mail it doesn't show perfect, but very much better than in Aqua Mail where it's really terrible. On the screenshot you can see the same mail in VI on the mail server, in K-@ and Aqua.
It seems like the text mail is displayed as HTML where multiple white spaces are ignored.

Is there any option to correct that?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Um, not sure I agree with "terrible" :)

First, get rid of proportional font: Menu -> View -> Enable mono font.

Second, if it's the links that bother you (Aqua tries to find things that looks like phone numbers, and highlights it): Aqua settings -> Message view -> *disable* Highlight phone numbers.

That did the trick. With "mono font" it looks beautiful, like the text file on the server and better than in K-@ Mail  ;)

Yeah!

I like Aqua Mail and in some points it's better than K9, Kaiten or K-@. Especially the songs are much better and easier!

At least the folder view (scrolls back to the top every time and missing pinning of subfolders of inbox to top) and most of all the limit for push folders are still keeping me away from buying Pro.

Can you explain what those are?

>> limit for push folders

Which one? The Gmail's server side "15 per account" or the app's own, very reasonable, limit of 25 total?

How many folders in push mode are you looking to have?

I scroll to the bottom of my folder list a pick choose a folder there. After I red a (new) mail in that folder and close the mail the entry with the account name is at the top of the folder list. So I have to scroll down again to coose a folder below the current folder.

I use a lot of folders to organaize my mails and most of my mails are sorted into theses folders by sieve rules on the mail server.

For sure I know you can't change Gmail's limit  ;)
For Gmail I use the Gmail Apps on Android and in browser. I mean the limit of 25 folders total. I use about 40 at the moment and I think a limit of 50 should be enough for the next time.

But what would be the problem when the max. limit setting would be 100 and the default setting still will be 25? As long as nobody changes the limit nothing would change for him (and his battery).

Thanks in advance,
Tom

You keep enough folders on the main screen (account list) to fill it completely and then some?

And you set them all to "sync" all the time?

>> I use about 40 at the moment

This many in push mail mode?

Ouch. Your usage patterns are *way* outside the envelope that I imagined.

I'm not a "normal" user, I'm an IT Engineer and I would call me an expert in mailing and a "power user".
Mail is still an important thing for me and maybe I should explain the way I use mail a little bit.
I use a lot of folders in the most accounts and sort incoming mails with sieve rules on my mail server into folders to keep my inbox small and get a quick overview of "unexpected" mails. I know new mails in folders are expected and not really urgent. So I check these later, when I have time.
I have different accounts for different things: one for private stuff (house, finance, shopping, ..), one for technical stuff (mailing lists, forums, services, ...), one for my own websites, accounts for websites I maintain and an external account for some special things.
In every account I use more than the default folders (inbox, sent, drafts, trash, junk).

>> close the mail the entry with the account name is at the top of the folder list

You keep enough folders on the main screen (account list) to fill it completely and then some?

And you set them all to "sync" all the time?
In the two accounts I use for testing Aqua I have over 30 folders in each account (together 3.7 screen pages on my Nexus 7). These are only the visible folders and yes, I sync them all to have that mails available offline, when I have no internet connection! I have some more folders for archiving old things, but these are not synced.
This may look "over sized" for many people, but I use it that way for years and it works.

So, it would be nice, if the current folder would be at the top of the screen after closing a mail.

Yes, it's much, but it works and I need it.

Thank you a detailed clarification.

I guess what I meant is -- why use push in all those folders?

It would be easy to up the thread limit to 100 (heck, K9 has a setting that goes up to 1000, or was it 10000) -- but I'm concerned about battery use, when someone wants to actually use that many.

Just like I have seen users set the "messages to sync" to 5,000, and enabling push, or mail sync every five minutes -- "this app uses too much battery, how come".

You will only get push notifications for new mails in push folders! If you use server based filtering in many folders and will be notified about new mails in one of these many folders you have to activate push for many folders.
Alternative: you turn of server based filtering and everything will be put into inbox. Then you only need push for inbox, but have to sort all mails manual into folders or maintain rules on different clients, but that is NOT MY WAY!

It would be easy to up the thread limit to 100 (heck, K9 has a setting that goes up to 1000, or was it 10000) -- but I'm concerned about battery use, when someone wants to actually use that many.

When it's easy, why don't let you do the user the decision how many he will use?
GPS and other things drain the battery, too. But in any case the user can turn it on or off or adjust it the way he likes. That's the way software and devices should work. IMHO!

Other way I could use an iPhone ;-)

True, but I guess what I'm trying to say -- why use push for *all* those folders? Do you *need* to see instant notifications for each of those mailing lists?

But I should really shut up, it's your right and your decision...

When I didn't need it I wouldn't use it. So, why discussing about my needs and not the parameter?

I think that using 40 folders in IMAP IDLE mode is far over what I consider reasonable -- in my app, on a mobile, Android powered device.

That's just my opinion, about this app that I wrote.

Kaiten developers may think differently. K9 developers apparently think that as many as 1000 should work too.

They're entitled to have an opinion about their apps.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my having an opinion about mine.

Yes, it's your app and you can do or not what you want. If you will not satisfy users of your app, it's your decision, too.

I respect your opinion, even when I'm not understanding it. I will leave this discussion now, because it's boring. Why did you not just say "I will never change that option"?

If I would like paternalism I would you Apple and iOS  ;)

Still a nice app, but not matching my efforts.
