Can High Priority Notifications Light up the Lock Screen?
« on: December 18, 2017, 02:22:42 am »
Hi there,

Been trying out AquaMail and am loving all the available features. One thing I haven't seen in any other email app until now is high priority notifications, and it's a feature that I really really like. On my Samsung Galaxy S8, and I would assume most other Android devices, most notifications don't show a pop up, they just vibrate and show up in the status bar. Only high priority notifications can do that, which I love having for my email. The only other apps on my phone that seem to use high priority notifications and show a pop up are my messages and phone app. These are also the only apps capable of causing my lock screen to turn on.

Is it possible to have AquaMail light up the lock screen/work with Edge Lighting, or is this something only system apps can do?

Thanks!

I'd be more than willing to purchase pro if that would help this become a feature. Already an excellent email app, but adding this would make it just about perfect for me. :)

Well there is a "priority" notification setting in Aqua Mail - also called "heads-up" in Android speak.

As for lighting up the screen - please try this third party app, it's been reported to work just fine with Aqua.

And although it's been years - Aqua Mail has integration with another "notification enhancement" app called Light Flow. More about precise LED control, but perhaps it has a "light up the screen" feature too?

Yes, I have the priority notification option turned on, and it works perfectly when the screen is unlocked. Glimpse Notifications works, I don't really like having a whole other third party app for something like that, especially when the only things I want my lock screen to light up for are messages, calls, and emails.

Recently I switched to Pulse SMS for my text messaging, and it turns on the lock screen with Edge Lighting, so it appears that non-system apps are able to do it.

I know that the feature request section says read only, but if I were to buy Pro and put in a request, is this something that I could perhaps expect to see implemented?

Thanks for the great app!

Re: Pulse SMS ... turns on the lock screen with Edge Lighting

I've got an S8, but not sure if I've ever seen this feature (maybe I just didn't recognize it).

I always turn off the panel that you can pull out from the side of the screen - I think that's "Edge *something*" as well, but not Edge Lighting.

What does Edge Lighting look like? How is it different from the screen lighting up (which I thought what we were talking about)?

And how is this different from Samsung's "always screen on" feature (which shows clock and notifications on the lock screen)?

Samsung has an Edge SDK but it seems to focus more on this "info" panel than on "lighting up the screen":

http://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/edge

http://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/edge/edge-guide

"Edge(Look) offers specialized widgets that extend the Android View System to make it more usable, visible, and intuitive."

---

To summarize, at this point I'm thoroughly confused.

Sorry for the confusion, I'll try to explain it better here.

I've kind of used the term "lighting up the lock screen" and "Edge Lighting" interchangeably. Samsung's Edge Lighting feature is a setting you can toggle (Settings > Display > Edge screen > Edge lighting) that changes how "heads up" notifications look, as well as the way notifications that light up the lock screen look. When the screen is on, it will show a little preview of the notification and a line of color that goes around the edge of the screen. When the screen is locked, it will show a little icon and the line of color around the edge. This looks great when the phone is face down, and saves battery. If you turn Edge lighting off, notifications will just look like normal. In terms of apps being able to use Edge lighting, it seems that anything that shows a heads up notification or lights up the lock screen will automatically work with Edge lighting, if the setting is turned on. I hope that explains it, I've attached some pictures of what it looks like.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned Edge lighting in my previous posts, as I've discovered it doesn't have to do with anything here. The feature I'm asking about, as you said, is just getting the lock screen to light up when there's an AquaMail notification. Being the Android noob that I am, I was thinking that maybe only system apps were capable of lighting up the lock screen, as my phone and messages app were the only apps I had that would do it. However, I've discovered for myself that that is not the case after installing Pulse SMS and seeing that it could light up the lock screen.

So, to summarize what I'm trying to get out of this thread: Is it possible for AquaMail to light up the lock screen (without a third party app)? If not, do you think you could add it?

Um, thanks for the explanation - I have Edge Lighting turned on, but never seen that kind of "color frame". But then I always put the phone down *screen up*, maybe that's why.

Re: priority notifications - aka "heads up" - yes I know what they are, Aqua supports them, but they don't have anything to do with lighting up the screen (at least that's not part of their documented behavior).

Re: Is it possible for AquaMail to light up the lock screen (without a third party app)? If not, do you think you could add it?

We had an option for this and it worked fine for years and broke with Android 7 - lighting up the screen still worked, but the notification sound (if any) would get clipped at that point. Made no sense but caused a bunch of support cases.

I understand your "want" for Aqua to do it without a third party app - but if this third party app works (and I understand it does), why not?

OK, I understand. I don't usually like to use third-party apps to change system things, especially if it's just for one app. Feels... inefficient. Maybe that's just me...

Anyway, thanks for your time.
(Glad that I was able to catch the Christmas Pro sale!)
