Cannot preview images when opening email
« on: June 26, 2014, 02:44:35 am »
I think this may be a bug, since I assume the problem occurred with the latest update.  I have version 1.4.0.10 on my Android (Kitkat) phone.

I use Aquamail to monitor my security cameras and I'm almost immediately notified if my cameras show movement.  I get multiple emails per event, each showing a photo from the camera.  Previously, I could click on each email and see the image preview on that email.  A simple forward or back  and I could blast through the emails.  But now I have to go to each email and click on "attachment" instead instead of "message".  Since there is no message, I see no information until I click on attachment to see the image.
I went into Settings and checked preview images in Message View and Show Images also in wifi and mobile under Network.  But nothing fixes the problem.

There has never been this problem in previous versions of this great app.

Yes, prior to 1.4, the app would automatically switch to the attachments panel if message had no textual content.

I did it for calendar events, specifically, but it would switch independently of what types of attachments there were.

Then someone wrote me saying it's wrong, and if I was going to keep the automatic switching, then it should be limited just to calendar event attachments.

Do you guys want to take baseball bats and decide how it's got to be?

Will the survivor please let me know the end outcome? Thanks.

AquaMail is a very nice app, for sure.  And you are very responsive.  But I fail to see the advantage for anyone with the new change.  If there is no text in the message, why not default to the attachment?  That seems obvious to me, unless I'm missing something.  If there really is a decent reason for displaying a blank message screen, could there at least be choice in the settings?

There are numerous places in the Settings Menu to display or preview attachments upon opening, and I have them all checked.  But they seem to do nothing.

I certainly got spoiled on your previous versions, which made AquaMail the almost perfect mail app.

Yes, I do understand your use case, and I'd want the same if I was getting messages with no text and attachments.

But the user who asked for the automatic switching to be removed (except for calendar attachments, for which I've kept the auto-switching), had his reasons too, although we didn't go into details.

So now I have two users (two respected, valuable users, who I appreciate having) who are trying to pull me in opposite directions. With good intentions, and a good use case.

Another setting? Ugh.

Ok, what type of mail account do you use, IMAP / POP3 or EWS?

First of all, let me say that I'm amazed at the amount of work and dedication you have for this project.  So I certainly appreciate you even considering such a request.  There have got to be probably millions of users of your great software.

I can therefor understand your reluctance for another setting!

But I might suggest that whoever the other user was should provide his reasons for eliminating the automatic switching, which apparently you must have also thought was a good idea in the first place.  I can't understand why anyone would be opposed to automatic switching if there is no text.

My mail account is POP3, but it seems that auto switching for no text would be the obvious choice for any account, no?

Anyway, please do whatever you think best for most users.

Thanks again,

Ray

Here is the plan:

I've reverted the switch to attachment thing, and will work with the other user if he contacts me about it again.

The intent is to keep the switching that you (and maybe others) like so much, and try to resolve whatever concerns the other user had (I'm a little fuzzy on the details now).

PS - thank you for your kind words!

Outstanding!  It works great.  I wish I could show you how useful that feature is.

I hope this doesn't affect "the other guy" negatively - I can't see how it would.

Thanks again,

Ray

I would love to, but I don't know how to take a screenshot, or post it.

Also, if you can advise me how, perhaps this should be in the "General" thread?

Screenshots depend on your device. With Samsung, you simply swipe the screen

I have a Motorola Moto X.  I can "share" the message and send it to email, but since the message is really just the attached image, it really won't show you the usefulness of this feature.  In my case, I use AquaMail to display a sequence of photos from three security cameras that take a photo when the camera sees movement.  Each email has a different photo attached, so with this feature I can blast through many emails that instantly show a thumbnail image of the photo.  99% of the photos are birds or bugs or even the wind causing photo movement, so it would be a real PITA to have to go through each email and click on "attachment" to see the image.  With the auto display feature, I can swipe through the emails and immediately delete all of the unnecessary emails.  But even the interesting photos, such a a UPS or Fedex delivery, can now be seen as instant previews and those I want to inspect in detail are easily selected from the "uninteresting" previews.  So this is a great feature.

Last year, before I found AquaMail, we had our home burglarized for the first time in 28 years of living here.  Our security cameras caught the burglar in some details and he ended up in jail because of the photos.  But when this happened I did not have AquaMail and even though I was right next door helping out my elderly mother, I did not know the security cameras were recording the burglar's activity.  I was two minutes away, but I never saw the photos until we walked home an hour later and found the break in.  If I had the AquaMail features on my phone like I do now, I could have caught the SOB in the act.  Now my phone alerts me as soon as the security cameras send me a message.  I have a mail check interval set to 5 minutes - hey Kostya, how about a 2 minute interval?  Would this be practical?   :)

Anyway, great App!

You can set a 2 minute interval by selecting "Custom interval" just below the "standard" interval list. Might be a bit expensive on the battery, but it won't hurt to try.

The change to show attachments is in 1.4.0.20 currently in Play at 100%.

Under Custom Check Interval, it isn't very clear how to set it.  There are six numbers with "00" in the middle.  Is there a thread in the forum for how to set a custom interval?

The numbers are hours and minutes between mail checks.

If the custom interval is set to 00 hours and 00 minutes, the app uses one of the preset intervals from the setting just above.

If there is a custom interval, it overrides the other one.

OK, thank you.  I set the second set of "00" to "02" and I guess I now have a two minute custom check time.

The upper numbers are now 23 01, and the lower numbers are 01 03.  I have no idea what the significance of those numbers are, but as long as it checks every two minutes, I'll try it for a while.

Thanks again,

Ray
