Set a different outgoing email address?
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:22:30 am »
I would like some help on the outgoing mail settings please. My incoming mail server is a Gmail address (I've imported my company pop3 account in Gmail so it can push through Imap), so when a mail comes in it has my company domain as the "to" and not gmail. Once to reply or forward, outgoing email address is supposed to be my company address instead of Gmail, but Aquamail always replies and forwards as gmail. I've been using other apps which allow a different email address, but Aquamail just returns with an error saying my mail server settings are incorrect.

Im currently using the free version to test the software, and I dont think this issue is related to identities as I had not changed the identities settings in my earlier mailing app. Any suggestions on what the issue might be would be appreciated.

I'm using the account's configured "your email" setting (first screen when adding an account) for the "From" header.

If you don't wish to explore identities, that's where you'd change it, keeping the logins and servers as @gmail.com on the incoming and outgoing server pages.

To change in an existing account: long press, choose "Rename".

(I am not able to post external links to my email will read with 'at')

I wanted to ask a follow-up question.  I am using Fastmail for my webmail account and they use identities.

So my account login is say "abc-at-fastmail.fm".  My reply to is setup as "belly-at-fastmail.fm".   So when I email from Aqua the receiver sees my name but the address is "abc-at-fastmail.fm".  If they reply, then it appears as "belly-at-fastmail.fm".  I don't like this - I want the from to read "belly-at", not the login version of "abc-at".

So .. with the identities I would make the identity read "belly-at-fastmail.fm" for that account.  Now when I send an email the receiver would see my name and the address "belly-at-fastmail.fm" and not "abc-at-fastmail.fm" --- correct?

This is how Fastmail works and I just need to confirm.

If I am on the same page -- then a post by prochan2 ... (... ?topic=927.msg2587#msg2587)
Quote
But I don't like that selected identity during writing a message is displayed as my name. I've got all my identities with the same name and just different email address. So I never know which identity is selected. It would be nice to be able to give a name to an identity and show this name in the message editor instead of my name.

... would be a key upgrade.  I have a LOT of identities and each one has my full name but each has a different email address.  This allows me to take full control of folder names within the IMAP email system for auto-filtering of emails.

Thanks,
belly

@bellyman:

Your example has to do with Reply-To, not identities.

A Reply-To may be different from the From headers, but is used when replying, not when displaying messages.

An identity in AquaMail will let you have a distinct From header, so no Reply-To would be necessary.

@riccardop89:

Can you send me a direct email from this account? I'm at kmansoft / at sign / gmail / dot com.

Please note that I posted a message; then I read your June 2013 posts (sticky) on the Alias/Identity setups.  I then amended this post.

Q1: DEFAULT ALIAS?
I am not clear on the identity list - I am using Fastmail.fm - with that account I have an "Account" email address e.g. "mail-at-sent.com".  That address (a) points to my INBOX and (b) is used to login to the account.  Further, that email is used in the account setup with Aquamail.

If I setup an identity such as "club-at-bellyman.com" - whenever I compose, can I by default ALWAYS make it this email address?  Or will it always show "mail-at-sent.com" by default - and I have to then change it?

I know most people probably have the email address they log into as their primary account.  But with Fastmail they allow you to (a) create a number of emails using their -at-sent.com plus a slew of other domains; plus (b) I have my own domain.  I know with GMAIL - you can have a gmail address, but likewise you can pay $$ and integrate your own domain within GMAIL.   I am hoping there is someway we could (or at least you could add this as an enhancement) to choose a default.  ie  somewhere in the account setup have a DEFAULT identity.

Q2: ALIAS BY FOLDER
Is there any way, (or enhancement) that you could assign an identity to a folder?  So when I click a folder it by default knows the identity?  That is how Fastmail works.  They have personalities and you can assign name. email, sent folder, signature etc.  Smart Inbox likewise should have it's own default identity.

Thanks

@bellyman -- by default, the app will use most recently used account when starting a new message, where "most recently used" means "used for composing".

There is a way to pick a specific account or alias instead -- this is in the app's global settings, under "composing and sending".

As for an account per folder, that's not there right now.

Hi Kostya
See my question in this thread a year ago.  Is there still no way to change the email address the recipient sees?  Thanks for your attention.

The email *address* - no, the From line is taken from the account / alias.

Mail servers may not let you send messages "from: foo@bar" when authenticated as "something@somewhere".  There are exceptions, but most of the time, this is considered forging mail headers.

The *name* - e.g. "Sales rs@foo.com" vs. "Roger the Shrubber rs@foo.com" - can be changed, it's whatever you've configured in Aqua.

If I'm missing something, can you clarify?

There are no per-folder identities, still, sorry.

I have had the same email address for 20 years, say a@a.
10 years ago i created a website for me, with the email address b@b.  All mail to b@b is forwarded to a@a, with the plan to one day phase out a@a.
In Outlook, even though my Outlook account is a@a, I have the option to modify my name AND the email address the recipient sees, so I show them only b@b, even though I am sending the email from a@a.
All was fine until I started using Aquamail 2 years ago, and now people are seeing a@a on Aquamail and b@b on Outlook, because the option I have on outlook does not exist on Aquamail.  It's really a problem.  Thanks.

Ah, for this kind of mail configuration, you'll want to set up an Identity for b@b under the a@a account, I guess with its own outgoing server settings.

Then, when replying from the identity, Aqua will use b@b.

Is it possible to have a feature so that you can set a wildcard identity e.g. *@domain so that when you receive an email from abc@domain, it will automatically replay with abc @domain without having to set up individual identities?

Hi Kostya.  I have come back to using Aquamail after an absence and am unable to do this setup on my new phone.  I have bought the unlocker, tried various options on identities, but my sent mail still displays My Name (a@a) instead of My Name (b@b) .  Please help
