... I forgot to provide the justification (case study) for the "random linking":
The spam messages come from the random (totally made-up) sender addresses. So, linking of random messages would allow to collect all those random messages in random chains. 

(Of course useful messages might randomly get into those chains. But for those who cannot find their messages 3 days later anyway, that would be of no importance.)

The only subtitle difference is the message list display order: Aqua uses the newest message in a conversation for positioning while Gmail keys on the oldest.

Even for this edge case you will find a specific setting in AquaMail:

> Menu > Settings > Conversations > scroll down to dection "Customize" and enable "Reverse when expanded" (... from older to newer)

Yep - familiar (and use) that setting but doesn't apply in this case as it applies to expanded conversations. I was referring to the larger message list. Hum, unless you are saying order within conversations also impacts positioning in the larger list when the conversation is collapsed. Have to test that...

Just loved the new "sorting" by Sender+subject....
Since you now found this possible, maybe there is an chance in the future for sorting after SENDER only (independent of subject?

Is dev5.4 the final word w.r.t expanding conversation scope? I have not done detail testing to confirm it conforms to spec (sender+subject). Actually, not sure I have any material that meets the conditions this setting is attempting to address.

Sorting by sender already exists. When you are in message list view (or Smart folder) just open the menu. You'll see that you can sort messages by sender. And you can sort on other criteria as well.

Last night, @StR had the foresight for the "convergence point" where this is going. I agree and have put it on my to-do.

Re: final word

As this new setting shows, there ain't no such thing as a "final word". For now, I did implement what I wanted.

Use cases:

1) repeated automated messages (forums, notifications) 2) mail apps which don't set the headers that are supposed to link responses to the originals.

Both are quite valid in my mind and it's useful to cover them.

Re: sent messages be grouped in one conversation by SENDER because you'll get only one conversation in your sent folder

This however still needs to be addressed, I consider it a bug fix in this new "sender + subject" code.

Re: "clustering" feature

Looks pretty close, if all the individual messages are From the same address and have same subject, which is quite plausible (e.g. "Daily deals" from "daily@deals.com").
