Notification behavior different when in app (single email notifications)

I have a galaxy tablet with android 6.0.

What I really would like is popup notifications for each new email that arrives in my gmail account- not the you have 2,3,4, etc unread messages where it groups notifications together.

I read several related threads but still am confused. I have tried various combinations of the notification settings and the result is when I have the app open it always shows individual email notifications as they arrive.  The exception is when many emails arrive at the exact same time- then it says you have unread messages without specifics on individual emails.

However, when the app is running in the background I only get a popup with email specifics when there are no unread messages in my account. Which is rare as it's high volume.

Is this behavior supposed to be different in and out of the app? Is there a way to always force individual email notifications regardless of whether the app is on screen?

I read some people using the smartwatch option with success but I do not see that in my settings with the latest app version.

Sorry we don't have an "SMS like" notification style.

On Android 7, your regular on-phone notification, when they're "about" more than one message, can be "expanded" into individual ones. This is same "style" that Google previously made available for their smart watches (hence the setting's label in Aqua Mail).

But this is new in Android 7, and the capability is not there in 6 and older.
