AM does not see certain app to share to
« on: March 29, 2017, 05:02:42 am »
I like to occasionally save a few emails (confirmations of hotel or air reservations) as PDFs or docs on my android device. But when I click on share/print, Aquamail does not see the Foxit app I would like to use as a pdf printer or OfficeSuite Pro for docs. I prefer to avoid apps that require Internet to do their thing which is why I like Foxit and OfficeSuite Pro for this purpose. I know I can copy/paste but that is less convenient than just sharing to.

Q: Why can AM see certain apps to share to but not others?

Thanks.

The sharing mechanism in Aqua Mail does not care what type of file it is (PDF or image or whatever).

What you're describing sounds like bugs in those PDF apps - they're unable to handle content:// URIs only *files*.

Please try, in Aqua Mail, instead of "sharing into", tap the three dots icon and use "save" and when that's done, then try to share. Or just open the file from the download folder using a file manager.

Thank you for replying Kostya.
I opened in Aquamail the notification email you sent me as an example.
I tapped the 3 dot icon but (see attached image) there is no "save" option.
Maybe I have a wrong setting?

The three dots next to each attachment, on the right.

Oh I see, you're trying to "share" the message itself. This is different.

Still - the "filtering" (which apps to show in the share dialog) is done by Android, based on:

- The information about what is being shared. Aqua Mail is sharing text here.

- The information in the other apps, what they can accept for "sharing into themselves".

I just installed FoxIt, tried it, and yes, it's not listed. This means it doesn't support "the ACTION_SEND intent" which is the mechanism for sharing pieces of text (and not only).

As far as I can tell, Foxit has only three Android apps: Foxit PDF reader and Foxit Business PDF reader and Foxit PDF Camera. The first two are reading PDFs.
I might be missing something, but according to their description in Google play, neither of them can create a PDF.
The only app that can create a PDF is Foxit PDF Camera, but it only creates PDFs from the images (taken with the camera, I assume).

I don't know which Foxit you are using, but if it is one of these three, why would you expect this app to accept a text or html and to do something with it?

I don't know much about OfficeSuite Pro (I assume you are talking about "OfficeSuite Pro + PDF", right?), but according to its description on Google Play: "OfficeSuite lets you easily view, edit, and create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, convert to PDF, ..."
From this description, it does not say that you can use it as a "printer to PDF". Maybe it can, but the way I read it, it can save into PDF from the Office format files. It may or may not be able to accept text.

There are a bunch of "PDF creator"s available on Google Play. Some create PDFs from images taken with the camera. None of those that I've tried would work on a plain text. So, you'd need those that are specifically designed to work as a "PDF printer".
I can say that from the message view, 3-dot -> Copy/Send/Share/Print -> Send/Share/Print message text offers me an option to send the message to a few text editors that I have installed (Jota, "Note Everything, ...") and to "Convert to PDF" (from Adobe Reader, which offer me to buy/pay for that).
So, maybe OfficeSuite Pro, if it has a text editor, would work too (but would require a few clicks within it to save the message from the editor to a PDF).

And BTW, possibly the easiest way to do this is to "print to Google Print" and selecting "save to a PDF file" as the printer there.

Sorry for being unclear. Let me explain.

I use imap on the phone and pop3 on my home pc. On my phone, I occasionally need is to save certain emails on my phone. Things like hotel reservations and the like that I will need while traveling. Since Aquamail does not let you move emails to a local folder I was trying to find some other way to keep these emails on the phone. So one option was to save them as PDFs. That is easy to do on Windows because they have "pdf printers". I was trying to do the same thing on the phone. (Foxit will create PDFs in Windows, but apparently not in android).

I know about the option to print via Google, but I don't want to use an online service and want to do it all on the phone. The pdf was just one option I was trying to figure out a way to "save" certain emails on the phone before they are removed from the server by my home pop3 client. Maybe there is a better way.

Is there a better way to keep certain emails on the phone even when they are no longer on the server? Thank you.

Saving a message as pdf through Google Print is done locally on your phone.

For testing purpose:
Try to go offline (air plane mode), then select Google Print and save as pdf.

Alternative way to go (using Solid Explorer) :

1. Open a message, then select "Copy/Send/Share/Print".

2. Then select "Send/Share/Print message".

3. Select Solid Explorer's: "Save to" and choose your folder.

Result:
You will have a txt-file named "subject sender's name"

In this textfile you will find:

Subject
"From" name and address
"To" name and address
Date and time

and text body of the message.
