Note 3 - No counter in launcher
« on: December 25, 2015, 02:18:39 pm »
I recently upgraded from kitkat to lollipop 5.0 on a Samsung Note 3, SM-N900A, build N900AAUCUEOC2 and now the launcher icon fails to show the new messages counter. It was working before hand. Also Play Store upgraded it to the latest version it's sending out (it shows as version 1.6.0.5). I thought if I ran the TouchWizBadgeReset utility it'd clear and fix it but this is not the case. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much!

Hi,
You can try to make a reset of the counter:

1. turn off / turn on the option "Launcher icon counter"
> Settings > Message notifications > scroll down to the very last option

2. turn off / turn on the option "Reset on notification clear"
> Settings > Message notifications > scroll to the 5th option

One more idea:
Remove the app's launcher icon and "reinstall" that icon from the app drawer. Hopefully this will "reset" the counter.

Hi Mike;

Tried all that already. My guess is that AT&T locked down a bunch of things and this is one of them. When I was on build *C1 it was fine then AT&T forced it's build *C2 and that's when the counter vanished.

Another solution could be to "Mark all messages as read" directly by logging into your webmail account.
Maybe something stucks on AT&T's side and this procedure could help solving the "Unread count issue".

So no unread count at all?

This feature was intended by Samsung only for their own apps -- it's completely undocumented and unsupported -- and as such, may or may not work.

( it amazes me how HTC, Samsung, other companies document all kinds of useless crap, but not this feature which so many people expect, especially after switching from iPhones where it is standard and official and documented )

Two possible workarounds:

- Using the app's widgets instead

- Switching to a third party launcher that officially supports this feature: Nova Prime, Apex Pro, Smart Launcher

There is more info on this in the FAQ.

I'm using Nova launcher since very recently (pro version, to be able to display unread counters). Works perfectly with my Samsung Note 5.
It works fine on my Note 4 too which is factory unlocked so I'd guess it's an AT&Tism.

Kostya;

I think this is AT&T's "patch" to the OS. My Note 4 which is factory unlocked and only used on WiFi (no carrier) It works fine, and it was working before AT&T forced their patch to my vanilla Lollipop. I think you're battling more than manufacturer's lack of documentations.

Yes, I too think it's the ROM, and AT&T's changes.

I just didn't want to write a one line response that would perhaps seem like "finger pointing".

I understand.
Last night I did take out the AT&T loader, etc and put in a generic one.(it's out of warantee so it's not as if I care). The counter badges on the main AquaMail Icon work fine. The Widget worked fine on the AT&T ROM however it just didn't center properly with the other main screen icons and looked out of place

Thanks for the efforts you put in. As an author myself I know the pains you go through :D

Yes, that's normal: a "Widget" is different, not equal as an app's (launcher) icon.

Re: Yes, that's normal: a "Widget" is different, not equal as an app's (launcher) icon.

Widgets are "drawn" by apps themselves.

Launcher icons are "drawn" by launchers.

There are no restrictions: they can vary in size, shape, they can be aligned differently, the home screen can be a 3D "room" with icons on "walls" showing perspective, etc.
