Folder Tree for IMAP Inbox
« on: March 14, 2013, 10:53:17 pm »
Hi,

I just switched from K-9 to AquaMail and I really like it so far. There are a lot of features and the interface is slick. The only major thing that would help a lot is a folder tree structure for folders in the inbox.

Presently, if you have a folder called Test with two subfolders; Test1 and Test2, it shows them as three folders:

Test
Test.Test1
Test.Test2

The problem is that I have a lot of folders (for customers and such) and the list is gigantic and too cumbersome to scroll through. Would it be possible to have a folder tree view? It would be easy to interpret from IMAP since the folder tree is "." delimited.

Thanks for your consideration. It would really help a lot of us with large lists of folders.

Jason

This feature together with the ability to access all folders remotely without needing to sync is pretty essential for me. I have hundreds of folders arranged in a hierarchy which would be hard to navigate if all are shown in a single long list.

Recent development builds (available on this forum in their own section) have:

- As needed access to folders

- Hierarchical folder selection (when picking a folder that is not set to sync)

- Wrapping of long folder names

Kostya,

The IMAP folder handling has come a long way in Aqua Mail--thank you.  I have only one more request.  To file messages, I use subfolders under my IMAP Inbox.  In Aqua Mail, when I am looking at a message and select "Move to folder" from the menu, my IMAP Inbox is not available even when clicking "Other folders..."

Can you make the IMAP Inbox available from the message view menu like it is from the Inbox view?

Thank you!

@Wørtham - it's not? Here is a quick test with a nested folder, using Fastmail which uses an folder prefix, too.

There must be something I'm missing, could you elaborate?

Your example is exactly what I'm hoping for.  However, my experience is different--I don't have the Inbox available.  Although, I do have the my Inbox available when choosing "Other Folders" from the Inbox view.

Right, you're *in* the inbox, so when choosing where to move a message to, why would the current folder show?

Now, if you have folders under inbox, and that's what you're trying to select...

... please install the latest (1.2.3.14) dev build from this forum, that case is resolved there.

Perfect -- 1.2.3.14 works as requested.  Yes, I was trying to move Inbox messages to folders under my Inbox.  Thank you for your help.

I have one feature request for the hierarchical folder selection:

I have a hierarchy of folders that is several levels deep. In current version, going deeper in the hierarchy is a little cumbersome, as I have to first select a folder, then tap "Open", then select another folder, tap "Open" etc.

Another email app I tried (MailDroid) solved this more elegantly. It provides a direct "open"-arrow  for each folder in the folder list. Tapping the folder name selects the folder (like in Aqua Mail), and tapping the arrow opens a list of subfolders inside that folder. That saves 50 % of the taps needed to select a subfolder. I've attached a screenshot to clarify what I mean.

@bitti - I have MailDroid Pro also.  While I agree that MailDroid's form is better, I find that Aqua Mail's function is better.  With MailDroid, I often get "Loading..." when selecting the "open" arrow and must wait for the tree to populate.  Aqua Mail requires an additional tap for each subtree level, but the folders appear instantly.  YMMV.

Thanks for the Mail Droid screenshots... Shouldn't those arrows be on the right? :)

I'll keep it in mind.

Just want to mention also, that recently accessed folders (up to 3), no matter how deeply nested, are remembered by the app and should be more easily accessible next time around.
