No auto-sync after system update, Huawei Mate 8

I purchased a Huawei Mate 8 a few weeks ago. At first, Aquamail was running perfectly.

Two nights ago, Huawei pushed an android update to my phone. Since then, Aquamail does not sync automatically. That is -- I go to Accounts, and I see that the last update time was hours ago. (I think it's not a network issue. If Aquamail tries to sync, there is a red ! and the time of the last successful sync, but in my case, there is no ! -- it appears that it isn't even trying to sync. I've also had the phone open at sync time, and there's no icon in the notification panel.)

I've just spent the last half-hour checking every battery-related setting I can find.

- Aquamail is set as a "protected app"

- Under Settings > Advanced settings > Battery manager > Power usage firewall, Aquamail is set to "Keep awake." Underneath that setting, "system wake up," "app auto-launch" and "keep running after screen off" are all ON.

- System setting "Close excessively power-intensive apps" is turned OFF

- System settings "Keep WLAN on when sleeping" and "keep mobile data on when sleeping" are both ON

I'm quite sure the system update changed something that Aquamail doesn't like.

Downloaded, installed and after two expected sync cycles, no sync.

I did get Aquamail's prompt to ignore battery optimizations, and I accepted the prompt, but it didn't make a difference -- still no sync at the next scheduled time.

Huawei phones have been reported to have additional "battery optimization" on top of what recent Android has.
And Huawei users have reported back that they were able to add Aquamail to "protected" apps.

I'm familiar with "protected apps" and I noted in the first post here that I have already set AquaMail as a protected app. I just rechecked and it is definitely set.

Sorry, I've never used any Huawei phones, so, I don't know how exactly those features called. That's why I suggested to look at what has been discussed.
From what I remember reading, Aquamail developer, Kostya, doesn't own any Huawei phone either.
He might have some additional ideas of what to try.

From your description, your problem seem to be related to the Huawei, and its recent update.
So, I'd recommend checking with the manufacturer (Huawei) and reading on Huawei-specific forums, so you can figure out what has changed. I am sure that some other apps experience similar problems.

Yes, if they "enhanced" the "battery optimizer" and don't let the app work in the background...

...then it won't work in the background.

Sorry, simple as that.

It's quite bad that almost every manufacturer wants to implement some sort of "battery optimizer".

The best option is to check with Huawei support and / or their support forums.

PS - have you already tried rebooting the phone?

PPS - is AquaMail still set as a "protected app" (I see you wrote that it is, perhaps it might help to disable and re-enable this setting, just in case?)
