gmail connection error
« on: November 14, 2017, 12:47:17 am »
Hi There.

Thanks for this email app - I was a little put off at first as it seemed very complex, but working my way around it now and I really like it

I have a small problem with a Gmail account

I also have a work account (office 365) - working fine

When I am at the office and on Wifi - I can't seem to connect to gmail - emails never arrive - can't check for them - can't send - not ideal

If I disable wifi and just use Phone data  - can connect

I have followed advice issued in other thread, delete - re-add on wifi  - force web based log in - allow less secure apps

One of the errors as attached below

May not be a bug but I have just not configured something correctly.

Hope you can assist

Make sure TLS/SSL is enabled in AM's gmail settings.
Also, you need to enable IMAP from within gmail's web interface before you can use IMAP in an email client.
Lastly, make sure your gmail username and password are correct.

I say that one or both of the first two suggestions are more likely than the third, but it pays to double-check.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. I offered up the only things I could think of.

Hopefully someone more proficient at trouble-shooting will jump in.

I just tried connecting to both of those IP / port numbers, using my home computer (not Aqua):

64.233.188.108:993

74.125.203.108:465

Worked fine.

Oh, just saw this:

Your office WiFi network does not allow these connections.

Talk to your company's IT people (who will most likely tell you that "this is part of our security policy approved by Mr. Big the Executive Vice President").

Hi There.

Thanks for your investigation and reply

I can do this of course - but just wonder why it is now with Aquamail ?

As at least half a dozen other android app clients have no problem with doing this over work wifi

Re: wonder why it is with Aquamail

Because Aqua is not cloud based, meaning we don't store your data on our servers, and therefore ...

... the app connects directly to your (or Google's) mail servers.

Re: wonder why it is now

Because your IT department can make changes to the corporate firewall any time.

Sure. There are cloud based email apps.

Thanks for the explanation Kosta

And the native Gmail app is cloud based too ?

Is there anyway to have my gmail check through data connection other than disabling wifi every time ?

Re: And the native Gmail app is cloud based too

To my knowledge, they don't use IMAP, so their traffic is looks like web browsing.

Aqua Mail's attempts to connect to IMAP are easily filtered.

But - if your IT department wanted to block Gmail app they could do that too. Or Type Mail I suppose although that'd be harder (and then they might not be happy about it).

--

To answer your question - no if Aqua's mail server connectivity on the WiFi network is blocked, then it's blocked.

--

And to summarize again - this is not a technical issue.

This is a "policy" issue with a technical "facet".

Having already bought the pro version and really liking the program - I don't want to swap to something else again

I have found a workaround for me - by auto forwarding a copy of my gmail emails to my office account and marking them read on the gmail server

I can read them then at work and delete the copy  - leaving the original in my gmail for sorting later

Not perfect - but at least I'm not missing any important emails for 8 hours
