Smart Folder and sent messages
« on: January 17, 2016, 06:47:04 pm »
Hi,

I have an account which inbox is not shown in my Smart Folder. When I chose to show sent messages in my Smart Folder, then sent messages from this account are shown as well. That does not really make sense to me.

Hi,
Please check your settings:
> Settings > Smart Folder > Smart Folder time period > choose one of the offered options...

It is not related to the time period. If I choose sent mail from that same list, then sent mail from all accounts is included.

To rephrase: I can chose which inboxes to include in the Smart Folder, but I cannot chose which sent mail folders to include.

This is not a big deal, I was just surprised to see sent mail from all accounts when I chose to see sent mail in the Smart Folder.

Thanks for clarification.
Yes, you are right. Unfortunately there is no option in Account settings "Options and folders" > Folders > Sent (folder) > to disable "Show in Smart Folder"

Used to be possible, but since 1.6.0 it's "all or nothing" because of conversations.

Kostya ,
Please excuse me for getting into this conversation,  but I think there might be some misunderstanding here.
I am not using smart folder, but what mabahg described seems to be a logical bug even from the point of view of the conversations: when a particular account is excluded from the smart folder, the corresponding  Sent folder should be automatically excluded as well. (I.e.it doesn't even need to be a special config option). You are not grouping together into conversations messages across accounts.
So, the messages from the "widowed" Sent folder are  by themselves, without the matching incoming ones.

Hi StR,
Thanks for your reply.
However, there are two things to clarify regarding the Smart Folder:

1. You can't exlude a whole account from showing messages in the Smart Folder, but you are able to exclude one or more folders or each folder of an specific account:
> Account settings > Options and folders > Folders > disable option "Show in Smart Folder"

But, if the option "Show in Smart Folder" (in App settings) is set, then sent messages from this account will be shown in the Smart Folder.

2. "Conversation View" is grouping messages together into conversations across folders and even across accounts (in Smart Folder)!  8)

When "Sent in smart folder" is enabled:

It means "show all sent messages" (not "show incoming type messages and then pull up related sent messages").

And it it is an app level not account level setting, so it applies to all accounts.

So for example, this would include any just sent messages without (so far) any replies.

---

When "Sent in smart folder" is disabled, and also "across folders" is enabled:

It means "show incoming type messages and then pull up related sent messages" (not  "show all sent messages").

And this is also an app level setting to it means "pull up related sent messages *if any* from *all* accounts".

( "related" + "if any" is the difference from "when sent in smart folder is disabled").

I can agree that it might have been more logical to do "pull up related sent messages *if any* from *any* account which has *at least one* folder in the smart folder". Unfortunately, my db schema is not that flexible (and there can be a performance impact on adding this condition, I'm actually not sure, sorry).

@mikeone: thank you for the clarificaiton. I didn't know that.
(And it's a slight surprise to me, since all other "cross-pollination", including moving messages is not enabled.)

@Kostya:
Thank you for taking the time to explain the technical details. I understand if it is the db schema restrictions. (Although I am surprised to hear that that's the case with your db schema, since it allows you a per-folder inclusion into the Smart folder.)

You might want to make a note to yourself: if you'd ever have a change in the db schema with one of the future releases, you can include the provision for the behavior discussed in this thread.
(I know it is a PITA to switch a db schema, but even Adobe changes it with a major version release of their products, e.g. Photoshop LightRoom. And in that case, the newly installed version offers to convert the old db into the new one during the first start.)
But again, I don't have any personal steak in this functionality.

It's partly schema, partly UI, partly inter-dependencies between all the various options and settings (exponential complexity when you combine them with each other), and partly a potential performance issue.
