Since the new text editor cannot use a black background for technical reasons (FAQs, New text editor in version 1.14) many have suggested to turn off the new editor if white text on a black background in the composition window is desired.  And Kostya has stated it is “very unlikely” the dark theme will be supported in the new editor.[Re: Version 1.14.0-768-dev - "work in progress", not in Google Play]  To compound matters it also appears the old editor will only be supported “for at least as long as we support Android 4.0 – 4.4”.[Re: Background white, email answer]

As such we may reach a point at some time in the future where the ability to have a dark (black) background in the composition pane will no longer be available.  Did I miss something, entirely possible, or is the subject of this post a valid conclusion?

I’m sure the choice of a “muted” light gray for the background was given some thought in light of the technical limitation (whatever that may be).  However I can’t help wondering if a darker background color could be used in the “Dark, including messages” theme, one that would work well with white text.

Which is going to be quite some time - we still have a significant %% of our users running Android 4.*

The text has to be black. And so the background was "muted" but still light enough for black (dark) text to be visible.

Thanks for the explanation Kostya.  I was falsely assuming (based on a recent post where use of white text was discouraged) that text could be white, which lead me to the idea that the technical reason for the situation was related to a background color issue.

I sincerely hope white text with a black background can be a future option *before* the old editor is no longer supported.  My phone is setup for a high contrast theme, so seeing black on white jars my senses, makes it difficult to read what I am writing, …  Based on other posts in this forum it appears other users are also not happy about not being able to use white text on a black background in the new editor.

FWIW, Byron

I second this recommendation very much.
