Re: Green locks for SPF and DKIM should be optional.

Think so?

It's small and (I think) gives a very nice feeling -- "no idea what it is, but a green icon must be something good".

Re: hint for Calibri / Georgia

If you got the green panel, it doesn't close by itself.

If you got the "toast" (in settings, when setting the default), well, that does stay on the screen for a second or so.

And I just know that no matter what I do, there will be people asking "why doesn't Calibri look the same on my Android phone as it does on Windows?" and "what do you mean you can't help with getting Calibri installed on my phone?"

Re: Especially when it is added to senders from Contacts app. I don't wish to see locks next to my wife's name or my mother's name

Eewwww...

DKIM has nothing to do with Contacts app, or the sender specifically.

It is an indication that the message was signed by the sending server -- and that this signature was successfully verified by the receiving server, letting you know that the message's content was not tampered with while in transit.

Hm, where is that indicator?
I can't see any lock symbol!

1- All email servers do not offer this ability (eg. "Free" server in France).

Ah, I understand.
Thanks for the clarification.

The way this works is:

* The sending side (the other person's mail server or his/her mail provider's mail server) has to be set up to add SKIM and SPF info to the messages it sends.

Not very hard to do, I was able to implement it for this site (the forum emails) in a few hours.

* The receiving side (your mail server or your mail provider's mail server) can now verify this information and add a special header with this verification's status.

This header is then read by AquaMail and:

- If DKIM is present and "good" -> green icon
- SPF present and "good" -> nothing (SPF isn't as meaningful as DKIM is)
- SPF or SKIM verification "failed" -> red icon

It's not the same as Gmail's recently added "red lock" which means "some of the mail servers along the way, while delivering this message from sender to you, used non-encrypted network connections to each other".

This one, unfortunately, is neither standard nor exposed by Gmail's servers.

What those abbreviations mean:

SPF: the computer which originated the message is listed by the domain owner as one that "officially" can do this.

DKIM: a digest / signature which detects changes (tampering) to message content.
