Creating Cox account
« on: October 29, 2016, 12:36:46 am »
I originally was running Aquamail on my Android phone for years.  Was having some issues so I deleted app and reinstalled.  Now, when I try to add my account information, I keep getting the error that there is no valid user or password.  I know all my credential are correct, have tried both IMAP and POP3, yet neither will allow me to get back my email.  I downloaded another email client and it takes my information right away with no problem.  I do not like that app and would prefer to use Aquamail.  Any thoughts as to what might be going wrong. I as using the recommended setting per Cox site but some of the setting are not 100% the same as a given option in Aquamail.?????????

I suspect that what you need to do is to choose "manual" configuration, and make sure that the username is only the portion before the sign "@":  username, not username@cox.net
I think that should do the job.
Press on "manual", and the proceed.

Just in case, - as for the rest of the settings, here is what you should have (please, do yourself a favor and use IMAP, not POP3):
Incoming Mail Settings   Server name: imap.cox.net
Port number: 993 with SSL enabled
Outgoing Mail Settings   Server name: smtp.cox.net
Port number: 587 with STARTTLS enabled  OR
                      465 with SSL enabled
For both servers, you can choose the option (SSL and STARTTLS) with "strict" [certificate checking]
and "automatic" for one more option (I forgot how it is called).

I tried using just my username, leaving off the "@cox.net afterwards, but Aquamail requires the entire email address to be there.
I tried using every setting possible, in different configurations, with regards to the SSL types and still comes back as No username or bad password.  I set my password to a very easy one so there was no way I can mess it up entering it.  I even have "show password" when I am typing it in to make sure it is all correct too.  I am at a loss as to what could be rejecting my credentials.... argh!!!!!!!!!

**SOLVED**

I went and found an old version of Aquamail from Dec 2015, installed that and was able to enter username and password with no problem, set it up as IMAP and then rebooted phone to force automatic updat from Google Play.  I am now on current version and all is working.  Must be a bug in the current version somewhere????

I tried using just my username, leaving off the "@cox.net afterwards, but Aquamail requires the entire email address to be there.
It is the username part that was the problem.
I am not sure what is happening in the recent version, - (I don't expect anything being different in this regard, - but I'll leave this to Kostya to make sure.
But in all versions I've used, even though first, you need to enter the e-mail address with the domain name, when you go to the manual configuration, - you can always delete the domain portion from it.
In any case, I am glad you've solved it even if in a different way.

Re: Aquamail requires the entire email address to be there

It doesn't in server settings. Only on the initial screen.

The "flow" is like this:

Menu -> Add account -> enter full email and password.

Most of the time, it's enough to then tap Next, this assumes the app "knows" or is able to detect the right settings.

But if you tap Manual, then it's possible to change server settings, including the logins, to anything at all.

I'm going to update the app's preset for @cox, can I get a confirmation that both (?) imap.cox.net and smtp.cox.net need *just the username* part as login, not the full email?

I am not using them, but their support page that I had googled for the settings, indicated exactly that.

Thank you. I Googled for it too, and came to same conclusion.

And so I've already updated the presets file to use just the "leaf" username.

New phone, new problems, please assist...

When I have my Outlook open on my laptop, new emails will not show up in Aqua Mail.  I didn't have this issue before, but with the new phone it's now happening.  Not sure what setting(s) I'm missing, all help is very much appreciated.

TIA!!

Your Outlook must be using POP3 and must be set to delete messages from the mail server once it gets them.

Mixing POP3 and IMAP (default in Aqua) is bad.

It's best to use IMAP in all your mail apps desktop or mobile.

Or you can set Outlook to not delete messages - but the act of fetching them over POP3 will mark them "read" on the server and this will sync into Aqua. Maybe this would be OK for you though (as this will avoid notifications in two apps).

About cox:

I cannot access their help page, it's blocked based on my IP (Russia).

https://www.cox.com/residential/support/cox-email-server-settings.html

When I was able to, they had this info:

- imap.cox.net SSL port 993
- smtp.cox.net SSL port 465
- login is just user name ("foo") not full email ("foo@cox.net")

If somebody wants to check - and it's different - please post details here and I'll update the app's preset data.

They don't work on weekends - and this coming Monday is also a holiday in Bulgaria (Post-Easter Monday) :)

Thanks @mikeone.

Yep those are the exact settings in Aqua's preset data for @cox.net
