Resolved CM 11 alpha: Periodic checking stopped working
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:51:01 pm »
Hi,

It's been a long time since I've posted ... because all  has been working wonderfully!  :)

I have a Nexus 5 with CM 11 Nightlies.  All has been working well with aquamail until yesterday or the day before (frankly, I'm not exactly sure when it stopped working ... :p).

It appears the application no longer stays in the notification bar.  If I manually sync, I can see the aquamail icon in the notification bar and at the end of the sync, it goes away.

I confirmed 'Settings > Look and feel > Status bar icon' is checked on.  I tried to uncheck it and check it but that didn't help either.

I'm currently on version 1.3.2.1

Please let me know Kostya if you need a debug log.

Thank you!

Rummaging around the forum, I also confirmed on all four of my accounts the following are enabled:
  • Scheduled sync
  • Include in "Sync All"
  • IMAP Push

Cheers,

A nightly of Cyanogen?

Can you check that the device's system setting allowing apps to do sync in the background is enabled? In 4.*, that's under "data usage" somewhere, you have to use a menu to get to it...

If it's on, yes, I could investigate based on a debug log capturing the issue.

Hi Kostya,

:-[ ... what an idiot am I!  :p ... during one of the updates (yes, Cyanogenmod - sorry for using an acronym), "sync" got disabled.  *sigh*.  Sorry to waste your time.

To help other people from my mistake, here's how I found the problem ...

First I looked through the `log-AquaMail.txt' file.  What I did was enabled debug and ensured the debug file was created.  Next, I disabled debug and emailed myself the log file.  :)

I grok'd through the file and found `Prefs AutoSync setting is OFF, no sync'  Oops!

Next, I went back to AquaMail, `Mail, receiving > System settings' and switched it from `Observe all' to `Sync even when "Auto-Sync" is off"'  And voila! I could see the AquaMail icon in my `Notification' tray.

To enable `sync' in CM I take the easy way out.  I added a `Tile' under the `Quick Settings panel'  To do this, do the following:  Settings > Interface > Quick Settings panel > Tiles and layout.  Click on the `+' and add the `Sync' tile.

For the truly uninitiated (hey, we all have to start at the beginning), to get to the `Quick Settings panel', pull down on your `Notification' tray and if you don't see it, switch by dragging your finger either at the bottom grey (CM 11) bar or at the upper right icon (looks like a little person).

After I enabled sync, I went back to AquaMail and reset `Mail, receiving > System settings' back to `Observe all'   And all is well.  :)

Cheers,
-pablo

Thank you Pablo.

This is sometimes an issue not just with CM, but also with standard Android.

The system global "master sync switch" used to be easy to find in the system settings app (under Account & Sync), but in their never-ending desire to "streamline" everything...

... in Android 4.1, it got moved under "Data usage", and you have to use the Menu to access it. Easy to stumble into once, and turn off, and then never to be able to find again.

I'm attaching a screenshot from a Nexus 5 that shows where the setting is. It's the one labeled "Auto-sync data".
