Priority notifications for mails not working
« on: April 25, 2018, 02:16:57 pm »
Hello!

priority notifications are somehow not working for me:

SAMSUNG Note 4 SM-N910F
Android 6.0.1
AquaMailPro Version 1.14.2-840

I activated everything in the corresponding options (activation in general, sound, vibration, even in silent mode), added the relevant email-adresses by hand and from the contacts (and checked them twice) and tried it even with the activation of the general mail notification (although I just want to be notified if mails arrive from certain senders, not about all or new unread mails in general).

Since I own the german version I'm not sure, whether it would help to send screenshots of my adjustments in the options...

Did I miss an option to check in another section or is there any other possible reason I haven't thought of?

Thanks in advance...
Wolf

No sounds like you did everything right - but please send screenshots to support / at / aqua-mail / dot com, they'll pass them on to the right developer.

Oh and what happens exactly?

The app uses "default" notification sound / led / etc. even after it receives a message from a priority sender?

And you actually gets a notification - "default" - notification?

Well, let me first thank you for the fast answer!

So far the default "mail notifications" work (sound, notification, etc.) - when activated in the general options (for all accounts) or in the account specific options.

But if the "priority notifications" (in the general options) are activated solely for themselves there's no reaction at all (tested it - by adding my own email-adress as a sender - several times).

Another thing I don't understand:
There is a checkbox for "notifications with high priority Android 5.0+ functionality" (as far as I can  translate it) under the general "mail notifications", which only can be activated if you activate "mail notifications" in general...what is the difference between these "notifications with high priority..." and the "priority notifications" in the general options?

Thanks for the advice - will do so and contact support with my screenshots.

Cheers
Wolf

"Android 5.0 priority notifications" - only affects how notifications are presented, also called "heads up" notifications:

There is a screenshot here:

https://nexus5.gadgethacks.com/how-to/get-new-android-l-heads-up-notifications-your-nexus-5-other-android-device-0155781/

No connection to "special notifications from special senders" - sorry if this is confusing.

---

"are activated solely for themselves there's no reaction"

So do you mean that the case you're reporting is:

- Priority senders (your own address, etc.) + some "special" notification settings for those (different sound, etc.)
- Overall notifications are enabled

-> works, and you do get "special" sound etc.

AND

- If you turn off overall notifications setting

-> then you get no notifications at all?

Thanks for the clarification regarding "Android 5.0 priority notifications" - I really tried to wrap my head around the possibility of missing out the right combination of enabled options regarding my problem!

Sorry if it was mistakeable:

Enabling "priority senders" alone does nothing (no reaction to a priority senders email adress).

Only enabling "overall notifications" (general options) brings up notifications - but for all / new unread mails and not the priority senders alone.

....

Wait...!

...while writing on this reply I think I found the answer playing and testing around!

So for everyone with the same problem, please try this before you contact support or the forum (forgive me - translating this from the german version):

FIRST

- In the general options -> activate "priority notifications"
- There
   - check the first entry "priority notifications"
   - add relevant e-mail-adresses
   - configure the way you want to be notified (Sound, LED, Vibration, etc.)

-> No need to activate "mail notifications" here, if you want to be informed by mails from special adresses only (if activated it will inform you of ALL new / unread e-mails)!

THEN!

- go to the "special options" for your mail account (one entry above the general options) named "manage accounts"
- choose the relevant account
- go to "special account settings"
- go to "mail notifications"
- There
   - enable "special options"
   - check "mail notifications"
   - DON'T check sound, LED, vibration, etc. (because this will notify you for ALL / NEW unread mails)
   - BUT check "notifications with high priority"!

So this combination allowed me to get specified notifications only for mails from my senderadress I used for testing and not from other accounts.

Hope this helps anybody else - thanks nontheless to Kostya for his excellent support and patience.

Best whishes to everyone...
Wolf

Ah yes seems that your intent is to *only* be notified about your "VIP" senders --

-- sorry this isn't a scenario we support directly, but you've found a way to make it work.

Thanks for posting a detailed workaround. I'm sure it'll be useful to others.

Thanks for the answer!

...and "Yes": It is a workaround, since I now get noticed for every incoming mail also, which is a bit annoying, but at least it works somehow.

Although you seem to have enough on your heels, it would be nice if a future update would allow to be notified by only by VIP-senders ;)

Thanks for your time and thanks for a great piece of software and support!

Whishing you the best

This was done today - a simple setting in "priority notifications" section to "skip notifications when no messages from priority senders", by the developer who was responsible for this feature in the first place.

I should start posting "dev" builds of our "next version" fairly soon, maybe a week or two (under "development builds" as usual).

The problem with the priority notification is that I have multiple accounts and I want to use the priority notifications to be notified only for 2 accounts, and be notified only for address in the list. So, I have an important account that I need to be notified for every messages.

The best way could be to add the priority notifications option in the specific settings of each account like for others notifications settings

Other suggestion is the possibility to add domain address only in VIP address, to be notified for any mails from a specific domain.

Thanks

+1
A solution could be to allow wildcards (*) in the VIP address.
For example “*@company.com” for all emails from a specific domain.
Or - the other way around - "*name*@*" for all emails from a specific person, no matter which domain has been used.
