Change color of account names in account list?
« on: March 22, 2016, 05:48:26 am »
Hi.  Just picked up Aqua Mail Pro and am working through configuration, etc.

Is there a setting I'm missing to change the color of the account names (text) in the account list?  I can clearly see how to change the color of the backgrounds of different account names on a per-account basis, but if you can't change the color of the name itself, it makes certain background colors an obviously poor choice, i.e., there's no point in choosing black or any other dark color for a background unless I can change the account name on the dark background to a white or other light, contrasting color.

Thanks!

That's a shame. As a recent mover from K-9 to Aqua Mail, I registered on here to ask the same question.

In my case I use a Dark theme everywhere, but this puts the account name in white text, which is unreadable if I have (for example) a yellow background. As I have 10+ email accounts, and want to have an (obviously) different colour for each, there aren't really enough different dark colours to have one per account.

Given how much of the UI is configurable, this does seem like a surprising omission.

That's a shame.
@Philip:

I am surprised by the strong words you choose to use: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shame
Does this small feature of Aquamail really cause you that much of disappointment?

If that's such a big problem for you, you must be a happy person!
Truly!  ;)

I see that Paris Geek has already addressed this issue. I hope that will make you even happier.

I agree with your request, but please don't say that there are not many different customizable dark colors. Not to me  :) (see screenshot). I could have added Navy, Olive, Dark Cyan,  etc.

Have you been where you can custom colors?
Thank you for the screenshot - and yes, I have set my colours using Hex values. It just seems a shame to be restricted to a small area of the colour palette - especially as the account name is already displayed in black when a light theme is selected, so making the text colour user selectable seems as if it would be a relatively trivial change to make.

I am surprised by the strong words you choose to use:
I'm afraid that your link is to an American dictionary, a language that I don't speak.

I suggest that you look at an English dictionary for the colloquial meaning of the phrase.

Sorry, Sir, to my shame,  I did not notice your cockney ;) accent (besides "colour"). I could have provided you with the link to OED :
http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/177406?rskey=7ETsfG&result=1&isAdvanced=false#eid
But I suspect you may not have access to this paid resource, while M-W is free.

Even in OED, including colloquial meanings, "shame" caries fairly strong negativity.
It can be used "poetically", which still doesn't negate the negativity (sic!).
(to quote the definition for that colloquial and poetical usage: "A fact or circumstance which brings disgrace or discredit (to a person, etc.); matter for severe reproach or reprobation. ")

Indeed, some less academic dictionaries indicate that in colloquial British English it can have not as strong flavo(u)r. But the question is, - should we choose the less-than-parliamentary language as the etalon, especially in the international community?

Cheers!

I said that I speak English, not that I am English (I'm not!)

As with so many things in the language, there are many subtleties. While the word "shame" can have very strong connotations, the phase "that's a shame" tends to be much weaker - it's the sort of thing you would say if a pub ran out of your favourite beer, or you spilt something small on your clothing, or, indeed, if an e-mail client you were transitioning to didn't support a particular user interface feature.

Given how much customization the app does offer -- there is bound to be an "end", a "border", a "limit" (or something).

There is always more customization to add, but an infinite number of additional customization settings could only be done in infinite time or by an infinite number of developers (adding an infinite number of bugs in the process).

And even that's assuming infinities of equal "scale" (order).

So yes, those account names are white (more or less, IIRC), and it does limit somewhat your choice of background colors. Same thing with the light theme and its black (more or less) text.

Hey, I paid over 3 pounds for this app. Are you saying that's not enough to hire an infinite number of developers?! :-)

I accept the point that you can't customise everything, but some of the design decisions seem a little strange to me. For example, I can change the colour of the line between the date and the messages (which, for me, isn't especially useful), but I can't change the colour of the Preview text so that it's different for Read and Unread messages (which I would find very useful). Or I have a choice of Light and Dark themes, but then I'm limited to only using part of the colour palette because I can't choose the text colour for the account name.

I'm not trying to be critical - I've moved to Aqua Mail after many years using K-9, as it was the best replacement that I could find. Just found a few things that (for me, at least) would make it even better.

Not enough even for an infinite number of monkeys (but then who knows what they'd produce, the complete works of Shakespeare, or some UI customization features???)

Re: choices

Almost all settings -- and there are a lot of them -- originate from user feedback.

Now back to account color text:

This is a bit of a rathole. Some things may look easy but have consequences (e.g. the next step would be to change the color of account / folder names in the title bar, and then someone would be unhappy at *that* point).

And in any case, no matter how many specially trained tigers (can't get monkeys, right?) keep adding more and more customization -- there is always going to be something that's not covered...
